Tyres for my trip
Ok, I know, starting a thread about tyres is about the same as starting a thread about religion, but I wanna ask anyway.
I'm going to Nigeria on my Yam XT 600e this summer. I'm going to the Mauritanian border on my old tyres, then I wanna switch to off-road tyres, going to Atar, Nema, Timbuktu and then to Calabar (southeast Nigeria). I'm not going high speed, not on tarmac, not in the sand. Everybody is very enthousiastic about Michelin Desert tyres, and they will cost me €300 for front and rear tyre. My tyre shop also sells Pirelli MT21, 2 tyres for €165. Will the Pirelli's be good enough for a slow sand ride and a relaxed tarmac ride? Will the Deserts be twice as good? How long do they last on tarmac? I know that the Deserts will be the best tyres, but they are so very expensive. Will it be worth it?
