re oversize tyres

Hi
They will fit but they are very tight in the swinging arm, i done France on a set of michelin deserts last year, long story, they got me back home ok.
sizes were 90x90x21 and 140x80x18. very fiddly job to get them just right in the swinging arm tho. if you are useing 17 ins rims should be ok.

Ill be fitting an 18" rear... Spose 130 is the max then.

Did the 140's rub on the swingarm etc ? Safe ?

re tyres

hi
they are a bit tight.you have aprox 5mm clearence with the deserts. i would try the 130 on a 18 ins rim. thats what i am going to do next, at the moment i run on a 460x18 avon distance. i have just put on the front a tkc80 seems to handel ok. so i will get one for the back. hope this helps.

140 tyre

Hi ted,

Ive been running a Maxxis 6002, 140 tyre in my 34l for 12500kms now and i am very happy. It clears the swing arm fine, the only thing that gets a little close is the chian guard. this works fine with a little modification for the nobblies to clear, a priceless sacrifice for the improved traction performance, especially in desert sand.

Hope this helps

re tyre's

Had to change the wheel on my XT 600 E from 17" to 18" to get a descent mud tyre. easy enough, got another rear wheel and had it relaced with the rear rim off an old tenere I happened to have around.

cool! now I can run my fav tyre of all time - michelin Baja's! yeah!

Great tyre, pity they only come in the 140/18...soon as I hit the mud had issues with crud between tyre / swingarm / frame, not to mention this tyre was virtually feeding my chain / front sprocket more crap than it was roosting out the back...

changed down to a 130/18, prolly a bridgstone of some sort I think and the problem of the hungry chain ceases...

Saying that I rode the baja's on gravel / tarmac for the life of the tyre's (3 rears to 1 front :innocent:) with no prob's so prolly depends where your going i spose.

- something similar happened with me recently, when I was about to replace rear tire (already had spare) and suddenly met really attractive opportunity of Metzeler tourance, 140/80/17.
I remembered points of this thread, so acquired this tire without hesitation.
yes, it's the first time i'm about to use this size, so now my question is about tube - currently I have IRC tube described like this - Heavy duty Inner Tube 4.00 5.10. So, is this size safe to use on 140/80?

According to denniskirk.com/learn/tire-sizes-explained a 5.1 is intended for up to a 130 tire. 140 should be a 5.5" tube.

Thank you for reply. meanwhile, one old man from the local tire shop kindly shared his knowledge - one or two "steps" over the size is not problem for the "new" (i.e. unpatched) tube (same for the cars). since my current tube was "new" quite a while ago and is badged with multiple patches, will have to find out size of spare. or just a new spare when it will became possible...

i know you might have more difficulty finding stuff in your location, but if you want piece of mind, patching a tube is only to get you out of trouble, patches can become unstuck in the worst situations. You are simply increasing your chance for a flat in middle of nowhere.

better put a new tube as soon as you get home and use the patched one as reserve.
the old man is right, an undersized tube inflated to fill a bigger tire will stretch the patches and make the glue detach. not a good place to cut corners.

generally agreed - there's only one detail about patches - i divide them in two categories: done somewhere in nowhere, with cold method and done in the workshop, using hot iron and lots of pressure.
to me (so far) only the first category is the way out of trouble, since second method, if done properly, vanishes boundaries between old and new rubber...
