TTRE rim issue
 

hello chaps

I have a 2003 Yamaha TT600RE.
After a puncture on my back tyre, I found out that the inside of the original aluminum rim has got corrosion (which caused the puncture)... is it normal for this bike, after less than 5 years? is it because the bike lives outside (I'm a londoner)?

I therefore need to replace the rim... what should I look into? original yamaha, or aftermarket ones? alloy or steal? new or second-hand?
and if I went for something non-original, should I change the front one as well?

idea of prices?
any advise / suggestions / tips on the matter would be greatly appreciated.

Is the rim made of steel, I thought the TTRs had alloy rims ?

Try central wheels. Tagasako Excel rims are pretty dam good and they do a real heavy duty option now.

If the front is not looking great I would replace both. Try looking for second hand parts though as a lot of people supermoto TTRs and ditch the standard rims.

Cost for new wheels built using your hubs would be over £400.

TTR and TTRE rims do corrode around the spoke holes, the TTR had tagasako rims, the TTRE san remo italian ones. I usually wire brush the rims on the inside, fit new rim tapes and ultra HD tubes with plenty of talc.
I would be surprised if corrosion caused the puncture, probably a combination of old thin tube, old rim tape AND corrosion!

If the rims clean up ok, but are still a bit rough, you can use duct tape, or old inner tubes as rim tape. There's no reason why you can't use silicon sealant applied liberaly around the spoke holes to stop the water coming in and corroding again. Make absolutely sure the whole wheel is bone dry before you start this though, or you'll trap water in.

Anything will do as rim tape, as long as it stops the inflated tube being damaged by the rim. That's all it's for.

well the same thing happened to the rims on my bike (XTZ660). I blamed it on the winter road salt. They were so badly corroded under the rim tape that big lumps of alloy would crumble away with the point of a screwdriver.

There are plenty of boys that will rebuild wheels. I used James Weildon - 01722 712701 - www.brickwood.co.uk

He knows his stuff and its his opinion the DID rims are rubbish. Basically he can get you any rim you want. I chose Morad (used to be Akront) and laced them up with stainless spokes. That was 8 years ago and the're still fine even with the winter weather.

I think I paid £140 per wheel for the whole job.

I got them brushed and cleaned up for now, and if / when get the next puncture i will look into replacing it....

hopefully, like Leigh says, the puncture was caused by different things all together.

Ralph: was your XT rim that had similar corrosion alloy or steal?

They were alloy D.I.D. rims on my bike. The rear was the worst for corrosion but I replaced them both at the same time just for peace of mind.
