TTR600RE - Ohlins upgrade

Well, in case you didn't know, the later TTR600RE (electric start model) sacrificed the lurverly Ohlins rear shock for the electric boot

So, I managed to get a 2nd hand one on eBay and went about fitting it.

Its a bit of a strip down, so off with the seat, tank, exhaust, disconnect battery and off with the rear sub-frame







Now at last I can get to the rear shock. Whilst removing the Sachs unit, I took all the suspension linkages off & cleaned them then greased them all.

So after a bit of Wiggley Giggley, the Ohlins is in place

Whilst the bike was in bits, I also whipped the carbs off and re-jetted the beasty. I run a less restrictive s/s pipe and although she runs OK, I know shes a tad lean. So I replaced the primary carbs 150 with a 165.

So, time to put it all back together.....

All goes fairly well - hardest bit was re-routing the carb drain pipes

Anyhow heres the MONEY shot.....



The bike is a couple of inches higher now



......as you can see from how far she leans over !!!!!!

So went for a blast, nice being so high up and a smoother more controlled rear end. Also the new jetting is much better, only needs choke for 10 - 15 secs, and is a bit punchier too.

So all in all a good days work - just need some real mean knobblies fitted

Nice write up, thanks.

Some questions if I may:
Did you pull the airbox snorkel?
Where did you buy the main jet?
Why 165?
Are you going to raise the needle?
Do you think it is best to remove the subframe before you remove the carburetors?

Still wondering why yamahaha never brought that to the market.

Its one I had in stock - std Mikuni "button" jet ( Allens Performance Mikuni & Keihin Carbs ) - N100604, but the thread was a bit tight, so it may actually be a M10/14 fitted as std, coz thats what it looked like ??? ...and as the bike is lean as std, and I'm running a less restrictive end can, I thought I'd go +10%.

No need yet - but I've only done 5 miles

Even with the sub frame off, those carbs where a real pain in the butt... not much room coz the frame spine curves in the way


The bike does run much nicer (so far) and is more responsive and even sounds happier

All I need now is a set of 70's platform boots.....

Thanks Pigford. This is a VERY interesting thread. Please keep us informed how the suspension works out and what you do regarding the jetting/snorkel stuff.

Btw, does the bike really handle well with the rear 5 cm higher? One would expect some headshake maybe? Of course the TT600RE is dead stable stock… but still…

good choice, congratulations.
but did you not change the front forks too?
the TTR forks are 5cm. longer
When i did the same thing on my TTRE, last year, i bought a pair of TTR forks as well, to swap over.

anyway, the bike is so much better after the swap.

Right then - now done about 50 miles (with the snorkel on) and bike is definitely better all round Smoother, pulls cleanly from low down with no stutter/juddr/hiccups. Feels like its pulling a bit harder too. I think a 160 may be a bit crisper - but need to remove the snorkel first.

The handling doesn't feel any different IMHO, but you would expect it to turn a tad quicker - but with the torential rain the last few days, I haven't had a chance to "get me knee down"

There no way I intend to use TTR longer forks - Mine are in A1 condition and if the bike gets any higher, I'll get a nose bleed I would like to fit some well hard knobblies, purely for looks, but that'll raise the bike more and the Pirelli Scorpians fitted have plenty of life left and are bleedin' good!

Will report back once I've ridden with the snorkel out.

Trying to find an Ohlins rear shock for TTR600re

Great story, I live in Cambodia and my TTR came over from Europe, this is is a major pain as the dealers here and in Oz do not have the speck for the european version,
The Sachs original shock that is on it has died, (10,200km) I was very suprised as it's has not done very many miles,

In short, I need to know which Ohlins modle number you fitted to your TTR, or is there another brand you recommend that will fit?

Been reading. Your post re ohlins shock on ttr..
I fitted front and rear suspension onto my own re from belgarda model.
You seemed to have gave yourself a lot of work changing rear shock..
I changed mine without removing anythin from the bike..

I also fitted new belgarda bodykit an supermoto wheels.
Have just fitted braking wavy disc on rear an am on lookout forr 320mm wavy disc conversion.
How does your bike go with snorkel removed..
