Tt600r problem

Hi,
am on a campsite in Morrocco and have a guy here with a no spark starting problem.
Have tested the resistance of the coil first and secondary windings and they are ok. We have around 15volts at the orange wire from the CDI to the Coil when the engine is kicked over (no electric start on these models) but when volts are measured at the coil output there is nothing!
Any help or advice to get him going would be greatly recieved. Andy

Hi
If primary winding res. (4ohm) and secondary (13Kohm) are OK check spark plug cap res.(10Kohm) and pick up coil res.(230 ohm).

Yamaha tt600r

Hi, sorry for delay getting back to you but the internet connection is not that great. My results are primary winding 1.4 ohm, secondary 13k ohm, sparkplug cap (not fitted to coil) 11.5k ohm, pickup coil 227 ohm.
So looks like coil secondary winding is not to good! Are you sure that these resistance values are for a 1999 Yamaha tt600r belgarda model?

Didn’t know you could escape from cold Scotland, we will be waiting for nice pics and ride reports.. where?

Regarding your OQ all old XTs, XTZs and TTs from ‘80s to ‘90s should be in similar values, checking all my manuals but not any specific for the one you talk about your measurements are all more less okay, only the secondary maybe too high if you are measure it without the cap but personally think that can work (Secondary should be in 3.4 ̴ 5.2KΩ). The only one you are not mention is the Source Coil from left case (Brown-Red wires maybe) that should be in around 160 ̴ 240Ω.

values seems OK.To be sure about coil,cap and spark plug make a test IN A DARK:take a good battery,connect neg.(-) to the coil and to the spark plug.With pos(+)make intermittent connections to the primary coil.You should see sparks.If so and you have 14-15v from rectifier/stabilizer I'm afraid about CDI..
But first you should check the connector with 3 white wires that lead from generator to the rectifier (near oil tank i think)could be burning place.

TT600R Problem

Big delay in reply again due to being out of camp. Wired up coil as you suggested and we do get a very small spark at plug only seen in dark. Have got the carb in pieces at moment incase there is a problem there. Andy

The spark always seems to be weak on these kickers and, often, I could see mine only in almost complete darkness.
While turning it over, it is important to have no draw of current anywhere else; "don't even touch the brakes while kicking" was advice that I used to heed.

couple of possibles?

hi one time i couldnt get my tt600r to start i found out it was one of the wires to the horn shorting out as it all the crud from the front wheel try disconecting the horn ? ,another time i had one of the indicator wires inside the switch break away from its solder joint and earth out , as has been said any draw or earthing will stop the bike from starting (there is no battery on these bikes) hope this helps steve

Hi.
I've seen coil problems in the past where all the resistance values are bang on but a replacement coil was the only cure for the prob!
Try connecting the HT lead directly to the spark plug without the supressor cap.
Trim half an inch from the HT lead when you screw the supressor cap back on.
You've tried another spark plug yes?
As mentioned the spark is quite weak on some systems, an old thumper of mine had a ridiculously poor spark.
Try a towed bump start with another bike?

You can connect a battery to the TTR I did when I wanted a GPS.
I unplugged the two wires from the condenser {its round and under the fuel tank} I extended the wires and put a small battery in the top box,
With this set up all lights and indicators should work when ignition is switched on if something is shorting out you should be able to trace it.
When checking for a spark by kicking bike over you still have to kick really hard to get engine turning fast enough to get a spark.

TT600R Problem

Thanks for all the help guys but i have to move on tomorrow so will have to leave the problem behind me.
If anyone is in the region of Camping Zebra (very good by the way) and thinks they can get it going it belongs to Paul the campsite owner and i'm sure he would appreciate it.
