which regulator/rectifier to buy?

Hi guys, first post on this forum!

I have removed the rectifier unit from my yamaha xt600e and would like to get a new one. There are ones that are advertised on ebay for less money than others and look but I'd like to ask:

mine says SH629-12 on the back of it. Does this mean something? Is this no. important? I have seen ones that have 579-12 or other ones without any no. on the back.

My yamaha is a 3TB (P reg, UK).

Am I bothered as long it is a yamaha xt 600e with 4 pins or is the year of reg of the bike important?

My 3tb has an after market reg/rec and it works just fine. Dont know what the numbers would refer to?!... Poss batch codes maybe. As for compatibility i know honda cbr 900rr and the xlv 125 are interchangeable lol but thats of no use i suppose other than that generic oem parts usualy fit a range of models.

If you do need one n can afford it buy genuine, but like i said i have a pattern one n no bother so far.

I'm not familiar with your bike's VRR but . . . it can be helpful to switch to a MOSFET VRR. For many years the "trick" was to fine a Yamaha R1 VRR - it's a Shindengen Mosfet unit. They tend to run ALOT cooler, provide better regulation (though often the silicon controlled rectifiers (SCR) on many bikes are sufficient.

This can sometimes require a bit of fabrication to mount but that also means you can put the VRR somewhere where it's exposed to less heat (this is often a problem on many bikes) and then have the confidence that that part will NEVER be an issue.

Jim Davis @ Eastern Beaver sells kits to fabricate the hookup and they are of very high quality. There are many folks also selling the Shindengen VRRs with hook kits included - figure $125 or so online.

I ride a KTM ADV 950 and that bike is well-known for having VRR issues. I have a MOSFET VRR on mine now.

I've got 3 working reg/rec at home, one is on the XT and two spares. SH629-12 is the reference... go to ebay and search for them.. I can tell you that the reg/rectifier of the 2004 Yamaha DT125RE (the ones with e-start) use the same exact reg/rectifier as the XT's!

I got one from Wemoto (UK) a couple of years ago. It was a pattern part, but it has worked fine. I don't know the part numbers, but I know that Wemoto had two units listed for the XT600, and they are very different. Helpfully, they had photos on the site, so it was easy to get the right one. I think it was about £60.
