Tire Size 140 ??
 

I'm using Pirelli MT 90's, the rear needs replacing, it is presently 120/80-18, I would like to go to 130 but is not available so am considering 140/80-18. If my understanding of tire sizing is correct the 140 will be 20mm wider ( 10 mm either side) and 16 mm (20 x .8) greater in diameter. I have at least 20 mm clearance to all points...but experience is always a better gauge. The bike is '87 XT600. Reading threads indicates that 130's fit...how about 140??

Sounds about right from my understanding on tires, but will it affect your rear tire pressure and suspension settings? Why do you need to fit a tire that is so damn big, I'm new to riding and curious as hell?

yes, 130 fits easily.
140 does not, as I experienced with a Michelin Desert. I solved that by buying a longer chain so it cleared the two arms of the swingarm on the side of the tire. Downside is that with wear you reach the end of the adjuster earlier, so it does not last as long.

Just out of interest; I used Pirelli's in Africa on recommendation of Chris Scotts book. I found them to wear enormously fast (soft compound) and not that great in the dirt.
Could I recommend Michelin T63, available in 130 size, great soft-enduro tires?

Judadredd is right, I was reading it, and yep, right up my Alley!. the 140 WILL catch on the swingarm as Aukeboss says, the "Knobs" catch and the noise will drive you mad.... as well as the smoke and smell of burnin rubber......

I always use 130s with no problems, even knobbley Karoos..

I also hear the 140´s (the knobbies anyway) will rub but you can always cut/file and chizzel the offending parts off..

Its what the supermoto lads do when they want big street rubber on there MX chassis´.
