The new XT600

Anyone bought a new XT recently. Thinking of buying one for a trip toi Oz. Would appreciate any comments on this bike and any personal experiences, Cheers, Ernie.

Welcome.

To be honest Ern, I think it's generally believed that you're better off spending a grand on an old but good Tenere and then 3/4 grand doing it up than you are buying a new one.

In fact, I've seen a new XT600 "Tenerised" by Dave Lambeth in the past - are you there DL? Care to comment? I know he always has top-notch bikes for sale...

They haven't changed in years, so even if you want a new-style one, anything from the 90's will do!

The benefits of a *new* bike aren't that great if you're gonna be modifying it anyway. I'd buy an early 90's XT600 twinlamp if I were you ... no wait, I did!

AND try in Melbourne (if you think about other options) - biggest market for new and used bikes - usually with spares and stuff..

AND a hell lot of leathers, helmets, spares everything you need or don't for motorbikes...

Ern,
Bought an XT 600 in August and I love it, at the moment I'm just commuting but I never miss its a pleasure getting it out of the shed every morning.(even in winter)
Great all rounder and I've had mine at the 95 mph bit hairy but whoooee!

Thanks for replies. Will probably opt for new, two reasons really, one, can't find a decent second hand one and two, don't want the hassle of breakdowns whilst on route to Oz. Hey Stevie, just out of interest, what did you pay for your bike, best deal I can find at the moment is 3,500.00 Did you buy yours in Ireland? Thanks again, Ern

Hi
I assume you mean the 4pt model when you say NEW.
This is the elec start only model with a rev counter.
Best XT6 ever built.
No gearbox problems to date and it does not have half the frame missing from the rhs like the 90-95 3tb model.
If you are building an overlander then really it has to be a twin lamp 3AJ tenere completely rebuilt and uprated or a 4PT XT600E.
......yes I know your 1VJ does ok but the cost to prep one now is just getting too much..... (I thought I would mention this before I get bombarded with replies from the 1VJ and 34L gang)
