Does anybody know how easy it is to put an 80's xt600 tenere gas tank on to a regular xt600 and what type of modifications i would have to make.

You will need to add a Tenere fuel pump for one thing, due to the fact the tank petcocks are lower than the carb fuel inlet. The airbox and tank supports also come to mind...

The seat and maybe the side panels might be different also.

The early Tenere's had airbox under the seat, later ones had airbox under the petrol tank, so would probably be best to get a pre 87 tank (28 litres). Front mounting points are pretty much the same for all XT600s , not sure about the rear mounts. As the other guy said, you will need to plumb in a fuel pump, easy to do.

34L tank will do the trick
 

the 34L (83-85) tank can be used without fuel pump. the later models (3AJ) will not fit so easy.
