tenere 1vj ok without fuel pump and oil cooler ?

my girlfriend has recently recieved her 1vj tenere back from a well known specialist who has removed the oil cooler and fuel pump, saying thay they are not neccessary. i was wondering if anyone has had experience riding these bikes for long periods without these?

Dear Mavis Cruet,

What right does he have to remove these items unless he was specifically asked to? I can't comment on the fuel pump (although I would have thought it necessary) but the oil cooler is always a beneficial item, and an expensive one to replace.

Yamaha don't fit these things just for fits and giggles. I'd be taking it back and asking him to refit them at no cost (unless he's already sold them!) and find yourself another mechanic.

If its who I think it is he sent me details stating why it does not need them.....thats if he modified the head bolts....if its DL he knows what he is doing as he does the paris dakar so is well experienced if not the best......also modern oil does help....

Care to share these pearls of wisdom with Karl and his girlfriend, as it doesn't sound like it was explained to them.

I'm also keen to learn as I've only ever heard of a cooler being of benefit to keep the oil cooler and elongate the viscosity properties (even with modern oil) That's why a lot of modern machines still have them fitted.

If the sole purpose is to reduce weight by it's removal and that what was originally asked for then OK, otherwise taking parts from someone's bike without consultation is a :nono: in my book.

DL or not I'd be furious, there is clearly very little customer service.
I know oil coolers can be knocked on xt's and not always necessary but I'd like to be asked first! I'd be taking it bac on principle!

Recently my fuel pump decided that 25 years is enough, so I removed it. So far no problems. Just keep in mind that you can't burn last 0.5L of fuel.

Oil cooler is different story, on 1VJ is MUST HAVE. It's so essential, that many have installed bigger oil cooler.

There`s no doubt that DAVE LAMBETH (there said it) knows what he`s doing but i think it would have been better to run the idea past you first?

I always thought the 1VJ`s had the cooling problems & would benefit from an oil cooler? but hey what do i know. :cool4:

yes it was the gentleman above mentioned and he explained the use of longer head bolts and am happy to bow to his knowladge, but just wondered if anyone had any experience of these bikes sans cooler? as far as the pump goes we only noticed it wasnt there the other day after 'running out of fuel' for the second time after only using 13 liters. 1 thing less to clean i guess!

I'd be pretty pissed if this was my bike unless I'd requested it.

I would not EVER remove an oil cooler. Most 2012 bikes still have them.

Inability to use last bit of fuel in tank? You just found out why Yamaha fitted it.

Well just by coincidence today ive got two of my members here at my place on there 1VJ`s having traveled all the way from Melbourne.

We have been discussing this very topic (over a few beers as you do) and Dave had remarked that without the fuel pump you will be leaving easy five liters of fuel in your tank.

And as for the oil cooler, here its essential with temps in the summer over 40.

This is true when you have malfunctioning fuel pump, but when you remove pump there is cca 0.5L of fuel in tank left after engine dies.

I've removed the fuel pump on all 3 of my 3AJ's... my current 1VJ will also be assembled without one, I do know I'll get less miles per tankful.... the oil coolers however have & will remain.

What I would say, if Dave L has removed the oil cooler on your bike it will be fine, Dave knows these engines inside out & also to him his reputation is everything, he would not do anything to damage that...

kenymact 10 Sep 2012 20:10

I,m with g30ff......I,ve rebuilt my ivj using the modified head bolts and the only reason I refitted the oil cooler was I did not have any other oil hoses to replace the parts that will be removed......

docsherlock 10 Sep 2012 20:18

So DL knows more about the engines than the Yamaha engineers that designed and built the bloody thing?

Interesting point of view.

Each to his/her own, but I would not personally remove an oil cooler from any bike that had it factory fitted.

kenymact 11 Sep 2012 01:24

Yeah Dave knows lots more....you should check out his overland web sites.......lots of racing experience.....
