Temperature guage ? - Dipstick maybe ??
 

As the XT has no temp guage and is air cooled, i am concerned about overheating.

If there a temp guage dipstick available for the XT600E or an alternative ??

Anyone had any experience with this ??

hiya hopefully i have done this right and the link works i have seen these on ebay they screw in to the case some where don't know if they are any good (not dash mounted) they look the same thing as the link u postedhttp://cgi.ebay.co.uk/YAMAHA-TW-XV-X...QQcmdZViewItem

looks like the same one thats on M&P... Things is, the XT's filler cap is also the dipstick. I wonder if these double up as the dipstick. Iv emailed the ebay seller to find out, ill post up the reply if & when he answers !

i don't think they could go in the tank all the others i have seen go into the cases but will be interested in what you find out.

I cant see that working on the XT as the sump plug is at the bottom of the case and it was get battered and broken in 5 mins. Especially being a glass faced unit.

i wondered if there was anywhere else they could go on top of the engine there are some oil ways it wouldn't go in my tank anywhere i could see it as it is the top of the frame. will have to see what they say

I've got one of those in my '03 XT600E. It screws into the top of the oil tank. It acts as a dipstick but not as well as the plastic original as;
It has no markings on it
It is polished steel and oil doesn't show up as well as it does on black plastic.

You need to compare the two on first fitting in order to "calibrate" the steel item. As I recall when there is 40mm of oil on the steel item, it is equivalent to the top mark on the plastic original. Just check so you are sure.
As for temperature, my bike shows around 80 on a short commute, 90 on a bit of a back lanes run out, and can exceed 100 if pushed up the motorway. You have to decide for yourself if you are going to worry about the numbers.

hi not sure if this helps the cause, however there are stick on temp gauges here in aus, they go on the side of the head or engine not certain, rather small last a few washes at least as far as i am aware. Some of the race teams use them in Aus, honda not sure who else, maybe a option in place of the mechanical ones.. cheers al

Yes, it looks like it. The one you linked to is photographed from a head on angle. If you saw it from side on you would see that the chrome stub just showing is in fact around 4" long, perhaps a little more. A quick phone call would confirm, but it looks the same and works. I checked it's accuracy with some boiling water and it was within a couple of degrees.

Don't fix it if it ain't broken. There is thousands of XT's on the roads without oil temp gauges and they run just fine.

Nothing is trying to be fixed. Just improved !!

If it does not break it's not complicated enough!

actually there has been several reports of the stock plastic dipstick melting.

i got this one from kedo for my ttr but they have others to fit nearly all XT's
