tappet cover

Hello. I think I have a slight oil leak coming from the tappet cover. I dont really know much at all about engines (Im learning as I go along!). Is it as simple as just taking the tappet cover off and putting some gasket sealant arount it and then replacing? Or are bits going to fall, pop out etc??? Thanks for any help.

No great dramas, it's just going to leave a bit of an oily mess - just keep an eye on the oil level. What's the bike? If you go the sealant route just remember to use the minimum required, don't use more and more if the initial attempts fail...

Hey, cheers for that. The bike is a 1990 xt600e 3tb, yep the one withour the rev counter. So it wouldnt be a worry then? Just take the cover off, wipe off any oil that may spill over and seel as you would anything else and then put the cover back on? Sorry, but when you dont know you dont know!!!! cheers!

One more thing!!!...Is any gasket sealant ok? My boss said he has some that I can use. Cheers again!!!!

The sealant could work, the 3TB doesn't use a gasket on the tappet covers normally. I would suggest taking off the tappet covers and checking them for burrs, dirt, anything that would keep the surfaces from mating a forming a seal. Is the oil leak coming from the exhaust or intake side?

Tappet cover should have a rubber o-ring to seal it, these sometimes get squashed flat and loose the seal. Easy replace o-ring seal and less messy than gasket goo.

Hi. The leak is coming from the intake side. Yeah I know its supposed to be a large o-ring that seals it, I just figured that it was old and had finally given up the ghost, after all the bike is 18 years old, and from what I can gather the previous owners used it as a hack bike and didnt put much love back! I however give it hugs!!! (Not really, just incase any of you think im a bit strange!). I bought the bike 4 or 5 months ago and am slowley doing it up the best I can, it was very cheap!!! It only developed the leak a couple of weeks ago. Cheers again for all the help!

Wow, my bad. I didn't remember an o-ring in there last time I had it off. They're only about $2-3US each, replace 'em and be done with it.
