Swing arm free play

I have a problem with a vertical movment in the swing arm. How much is OK?

When the rear of the bike is elevated the play is about half an inch (12mm) at the end of the swing arm, from bottom position. I can not see that there is any free play in the relay arm. The play is not rough or tight. There is no side play at all.

The bike did not pass the yearly inspection so I have to do something to get rid of the free play!

Common problem on XT 600's The bearings in the linhkage corrode to shit.

The vertical play should be minimal.

OK, I have checked all links. I removed the shock and tested the links by hand. The bike is now 12000Km. So it can not be the mileage.

I spoke to a mechanic who services the messenger bikes in Stockholm (almost all Xt´s!). He said that this is common and it´s not possible to get rid of the play completely. I´ll give the inspection guys a new try!

Hi, I had to recently MOT my baby, and found that there was a small amount of play in the swing arm the mechanic re greased the nipple and hey presto it resolved the play, granted it was not as bad as your might be, but it might help.

OK, I gambled and went to the same inspection station but another inspector.
Guess what!? He says "The bike is OK".

The play is the same as before. I´m happy but it cost me another fee!

Guess I´ll grease the links anyway. Thanks!!!
