supermoto wheels xt600e

Hello guys

Has anyone tried or had success in fitting supermoto 17" wheels to an xt600. Ive an '03 600e and a mate has a set of mint talon/excel wheels that fit the yzf motocross range. I am going to offer them up to the bike when i borrow them in the next week or so. but if this doesn't work, it there an alternative, apart from having 17" rims fitted to the std hubs. Im a machinist by trade so making spacers and caliper brackets won't be a problem, but im wary of clearance of the swingarm, chain etc. Anyone any experience of this situation

Thanks

Shouldnt be a problem..

Best getting a wheel builder to use the original hubs and drilling Excel tagasako rims and building them up.. Prob cost about £350 for the whole job inc parts.

I know a guy who can do the job for you if you want his details. He builds wheels for KTM and does these jobs on the side for cash ;)

thanks tedmagnum

Ive been looking into my options and think, as you say, the best option for me is to relace the stock hubs to new 17" sm rims. Then im sure i have no issues with spacing, brakes, speedo drive etc I have a reputable wheel builder who i priced for the job. Giving him the old wheels and new rims, he will strip the old trail rims off, and relace the new rims on, with all spokes and nipples supplied for £60 each wheel. I was expecting more to be honest. I had sourced a complete WRP wheel set, but it was going to run into more money than i am willing to spend.
People have been saying buy the complete wheel set and keep the trail set as a spare, but the reality is i will not be riding off road on the XT (have the crf250 for that) so will have no need for the original size wheels. Plus, i could maybe sell the old rims off to recoupe some of the expenditure.
So, expect a picture of my supermoto'ed up xte in the next month or too.

Cheers
Gav

i SMed mine a few years ago, makes a much better road bike without the 21" front knobbly. ive got dunlop GPR sports tyres on talon rims laced to original hubs with HD stainless spokes.
dont listen to anyone who says you cant put inner tubes in a tubeless tyre, course you can, its the other way round that doesnt work very well.
the front grip will be much better now which really shows up how rubbish the brake is and how soft the forks are. unless you go the expensive route and get a full brake conversion(dont think you can get one for these anyway) heavier fork oil and a braided hose is all you need. sintered pads too.

Yup, quite right. Your quite safe putting street tubeless rubber on spoked wheels with a good inner tube.

All supermoto owners do this on road and track.

You should NEVER really put tube tyres on a tubless rim though. They arnt tested or strong enough to with stand the pressure.

I've already gone down the braided hose route. It did improve the front brake i must say. The forks and the next stumling block. The dive at the slightest touch of the brake. I'll pull them apart and service them. And try the heavier oil to see if it improves things.

thanks

Definitely something i'm looking at doing (on my 96 XT600e). Ideally i'd get custom wheels made with a 320mm disc and caliper bracket, but i think this is going to cost too much for me. Guessing that i'll probably just end up relacing the front hub with a 17in rim and putting a 120 tyre on it.

Would I be able to get away with just doing this, and leaving the rear wheel as it is, putting a 130 or 140 road tyre on it? I don't know a whole lot about wheels / tyres, so not sure if the rim would be wide enough, or if it would give the rear tyre too steep a profile.

also, putting a smaller front master cylinder (14mm, 1/2" or 12mm) with braided lines will make a noticeable difference. still need to use better pads and stiffen the forks though.

Cheers,
Phil

job done

well guys it's a month since i asked on the forum about the fitting of supermoto wheels to my xt600e.
Been quite busy i must say.
The bike is now back on 2 wheels albeit 2 17" wheels with pirelli rubber.
And a few other bits and bobs and mods done too. Namely blasting the frame swingarm and fork legs and having them powdercoated semi gloss black, fitting taper bars. And also refitted my home made adapted yzf250 pipe
Very happy with the outcome. Just a acerbis supermoto front fender to add and maybe some wrap around brush guards. Heres a couple pics hope the links work

Hi new to the forums :D (1st post)

Just to say i have had my XT600E since september 06 and about 1 month ago i supermotoed it. What i done was to get some rims and spokes and get them lashed to my origional hubs.

What it cost me was £450.00 GBP for Black Excel Tagasako rims with stainless steal spokes made by Talon, and an extra £40.00 GBP per wheel for the spoking up of them. The sizes of my wheels were 17" x 4.25 rear and 17" x 3.50 rear which fits and looks real well. Also as a extra touch ive added a nice acerbis supermoto mudguard.

Things which i also had to do was to put some spacers in the front forks with a thicker grade oil as they were far to soft for the new wheels, and i also found the back end too be too soft and i also used to get a wobble at high speeds, and by tighting the rear shock up it handled a lot better plus it got rid of the high speed wobble.

Also when i dropped the front wheel from a 21" to a 17" the speedo now reads 5 mph out at about 30 mph and about 8 mph out at 70 mph. But i have myself a new digital speedo to fit just havnt got round to doing so yet.

Ill add some pictures as soon as i can get some taken :D

gavxt600e 27 May 2007 19:11

since i posted the pics of my xt, i fitted an acerbis supermoto fender. really good colour match for a non ymaha part. finishes off the motard look eh. where did you source you're digital speedo? im interested in fitting 1 to take the guesswork out of the original speedo. any details? I've just got it through it's 1st mot on friday but as i dislocated my elbow off the motocrosser yesterday, i'll not be riding it for a couple months boohoo
thanks

the speedo reads about 16% too fast. i just put some stickers on the glass temporarily, cos mine was in kmh anyway. i was going to get on the PC and print a new clock face but now i cant be bothered.

Fairley1986 27 May 2007 22:46

This is the speedo which ive got should be fitting within the next couple of weeks
