Stebel horn
The standard XT horn is pretty feeble, and mine had given up the ghost since the last MoT. I got a Stebel horn from Halfords (around 15 GBP) and fitted that. Direct swap, no relay needed, and fits where the old one did no problem. (The better-known Stebel Nautilus is huge and needs a relay in the wiring. This one is obviously the 'value' version.)

Bloody hell, it's loud. I sound like a flippin' artic.

Move over, cagers!

whats the model no of the one you bought is it the hf80 or tm80 as mines just died and i need a good replacement and halfords.com only lists the ring brand horn

It's the Stebel Magnum, code is TM80/1.

I had to go into the chav Corsa boombox bodykit section of the shop to get it, but it was worth it.

cheers BDZ the tossers at halfords call it the mountney magnum.
now i know where to look i'll get one later

the stebel web site is great they have sound clips for all their horns including the musical ones

Before you do, there is an eBay seller asking half the Halfords price here. With postage, that would be 10.45GBP compared to Halfords 15.99GBP. Perhaps not worth it for the hassle, if you have a Halfords nearby.

He's a bit tricky with the dB rating. He claims 136dB, but that's from four inches away! How often do you need to get someone's attention when they are leaning over next to your bike? The 112dB is from 2m away, which is more realistic. Still bloody loud.

you can use either, one is high tone the other low tone. you are supposed to have both but that would require more amps than a usual horn circuit would supply, ie need a relay from the battery etc and if your going to do that you might as well do it properly with the nautilus. i had a single magnum on my last bike and its plenty good enough.
also a sealed unit, im having problems with the nautilus ive currently got i think the weathers got in there somehow and one of the diaphrams isnt "flapping" well enough, one of the chambers doesnt make enough noise. im thinking about swapping it for the double set of magnums

i know the hf80 is the one that looks like the xt's standard fitment horn, the tm80's have the cone/trumpets which give a better note whichever tone you use.
the wiring on the xt is quite good so will cope with short bursts on a dual set up or the nautilus.
its a case of space and weight thats stopping me from fitting twins or the nautilus i'm trying to get my supermoto as light as posible but keep it road legal

As for weather protection, the fitting instructions are quite precise about the angle of the dangle, with the horn part (that might collect water from rain or the front wheel) angled down at 5 or 10 degrees, and with the opening below the centre of the horn. As it's a 'snail shape', any water getting in would end up trapped in the middle over time. I had to fiddle a bit with mine, as mounted at the 'correct' angle the horn would have fouled the front mudguard. As long as it's pointed downwards, I don't see a problem.

Also, the code on mine was TM80/1. Perhaps the /1 bit is the tone? Mine has 'low' stamped on the moulding, but nothing on the package. I'll have to go back to Halfords and see if there is a /2. Together, I can foresee large quantities of win.
