STarter Motor Problem??
 

I have a 95 xt600. I have recently tryed to start my bike after it sat for about a month. When I cranked it it turned over very slow. I checked the battery charge on a car charger it seems to indicate it is charged. Now the starter motor will not engage or turn. I don't think its tghe fuse as everything else works and from the wiring diagram if the fuse was blown nothing woukld work because it acts directly on the main switch. I have tryed turning the engine over by placing in gear and rolling it, it turns freely (apart from compression). Just wondering have I found a flat spot in the starter, forgot to say when I press the starter button the neutral light dims as if power is being drawn from somewhere. Should i try roll starting it and hope the starter is bumped into life??

I would recommend charging the battery anyway. I have seen this happen more than once and it was always a weak battery.

If you get a pair of jump leads or a car battery you can use them to power the bike and try to start it. This will establish whether it is the starter motor that is faulty or the power supply to it.

I did this with a car battery - it was just a case of switching the bike's battery leads to the car battery - takes 5 minutes - and it turned out to be the bike battery that was flat (starter motors need a lot of juice to turn them over).

I would also reccomend getting a hydrometer (which should cost £2 GBP from a cost cutting car parts retailer - great investment). Use this to check the charge of each cell in the battery - a useful troubleshooting tool.
