srx or xt?

Hi
I am new on here!
I am trying to sort out a bike for my friends widow.
The frame is from a 1985 srx 400,the engine is a bit of a mystery,it is water cooled on the barrel,it has no kickstart lever and it has an engine no of 4su-005***
The machine is in v/good nick, except it is proving very hard to start!
If I squirt a charge of petrol down the plughole it will start ok but only run for a short time.
I have really only ever done any work on old british stuff,so this is really new to me,it is also a bit confosing as it seems there are two carbs and exhausts but only one cylinder.
The cycle part seems to have been modded to the late 87-89 single front disc type ,it also has the different pillion footrests.
Any advice on this will be appreciated.
Thanks Gary
