spark plug size
Hi all, Just got my hands on a 1vj model tenere but dont have a manual. I understand the clymer manual is the way to go, but untill i get it can anyone recommend the correct spark plug model and what size spanner i will need? Is there clerance to remove it without removing the airbox?
Also whats the story with oil level checks, I cant see a level indicator on the side of the tank??

Hi 'blackjack'.

Spark Plug:-
The NGK site gives the recommended plugs for our models (follow the www.ngkntk.co.jp link). This normally is DPR7EA-9 or DPR8EA-9. I mainly run the 8 which is a colder tip, but swap it for a 7 to help mid-winter running and starting.

Spark Plug Access:-
My 3AJ came with no spark plug socket. I use a Triumph socket (part # 2300107-T0301) that is in the Thunderbird/Sprint/etc.. tool kit. The plugs are the same (although slightly different heat rating). The socket works great for me, having a rubber inner washer/gripper to retain the plug, and the top end is a smaller hex (like a box spanner) so that you can put a normal open spanner onto it for some leverage. I am sure there are plenty of other makes that may well be similar (i.e. 14mm size), but at least I know this one fits and works well.

Manuals:-
As well as Clymer, I also find the German Repair manual very useful as it covers our Tenere models (ISBN 3-7168-1789-9), and I have some fun translating it.

Oil Levels:-
My 3AJ has a 'dip stick' as part of the cap to the oil tank. Does the 1VJ not have a similar cap?

I think you will find the correct plug for the earlier Tenere is the DR7ES.

If the 1VJ has a dipstick, and if you are not used to dry sump engines, make you sure you check the oil level with the engine warmed up to normal running temperature. Check the oil level about half a minute after the engine has been turned off.

Ah....fantastic, just the info i need, The spark plug is so far down I can hardly see it, I didnt want to go poking about in the dark, so to speak.
I,ll order a manual cheers for the number, ref the oil tank the only time I looked in was when i bought it, didnt notice a dip stick in the inside of the cap ??? Shall check next time i play.

Reference the plug, i,ll muddy the water more and see what the local french yamaha mechanics recommend, in my loudest slowest english..

Also remember to remove the side cover before starting the oil check process otherwise you need to do it once the engine is hot and well its more agro....
