Spark Plug Cap for 34L

Hi, I need to get a spark plug cap for a 34L but didn't realise til I went looking what a variety there was. Some have 5 Ohm and others 10 Ohm resistors. Also, 10, 12 and 14mm diameter plugs. Does anyone know what I should be going for or does it even matter? Thanks in advance.

The ohm's has no bearing on the cap, however you do need to consider the length and shape of the cap as the plug is deep inside the head and requires a cranked end to clear the frame. A part search should come up with an ID number, the pic attached is what you are looking for.

Thanks for that Ian, just out of curiosity what are the different resistor ratings for?

Ohm's

Preachan,

The ohms rating is the resistance in the pick-up and secondary coil. The coil is best imagined as a gate that only opens when enough electrical voltage is behind it, the arc required to reliably jump the gap on the spark plug requires 28-32,000 volts, the bikes electrical system only being 12 volts the coils do the conversion between the two voltages. Regardless of the electrical system the end result arriving at the suppressor cap / spark plug is the same hence has no bearing on the cap required.

The resistance is there to minimise electrical interference - originally to your neighbour's telly but more recently to the other electrical bits on your bike / car.

You can put the resistance in your ht lead, the plug cap or in the plug itself but stick to just one of them (or none if you're not bothered about tv squiggles).

Resistor caps + resistor plugs = an engine that may not start - ask me how I know.

Suppressor Cap

backofbeyond,

I believe we are talking at crossed purposes, preachan was asking if the ohms rating of the pick up and secondary coil has any bearing on the type of suppressor cap he needs as there are differing ohms ratings for different XT 600 models. I believe what you are talking about is the resistance rating of the plug and cap for as you correctly point out to eliminate electrical interference to other electrical devices, but I don't believe that was the question.

Thanks for all the replies, I was actually originally referring to just the resistor in the spark plug cap but I'm currently trying to get to grips with the electrical system as a whole so all information welcome. More threads with electrical questions to follow!
