smoke

i have a 1991 xt600e 20,000km ,it burns no oil , but sometime after its been standing over night , on starting it smokes for 10-15 seconds , light blue smoke , do xt's do this or is there a problem .
no smoke is present when riding bike ?

condensation in exhaust, if you have a wife who ever helps to wash your bike when your cold and tired after a day in the mud, and she accidentally puts the hose in the exhaust it may spit and smoke a bit more!

Light blue smoke is oil. Something is wrong, but check the total engine oil consumption and then decide if you need to do something about it.

My 02 XT-E does the same thing if I overfill the oil - I assume it's getting into the breather pipes/air filter region and being sucked in with the fuel. Once the oil's at the correct level then no smoke! XT's seem to be complete sods as regards to the oil level, there are a number of posts regards properly maintaining it but I haven't found one that is at all reliable...
The 'steam' not smoke from the std exhaust is standard stuff - such a massive silencer obviously lets a lot of water condense out.

The only way to properly check oil level is ride the bike for at least half an hour or 10 miles or so, then let it idle for at least a minute, then stop engine and check the level.
Don't pay attention to what's mentioned in the book, checking cold and filling to minimum is nonsense!
So always check level when coming home and putting the bike away.

Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.

You don't have to be a Member to come to an HU meeting, access the website, or ask questions on the HUBB.
