Servicing XT600E Throttle Grip

I'd like to clean and lubricate the throttle grip sleeve on my 2002 XT600E and would like some advice on this. The protection plug at the end of the handlebar looks as if it should unscrew, but it seems the bar will bend before it moves, so I might be wrong, and I'm not sure if I need to remove it, anyway.

Step-by-step instructions would be welcome!

the bar end weight is supposed to come out, but is probably rusted in. squirt it with a light oil like WD40 or 3in1 and leave it for a few days, that should soak through so you can undo it. the throttle assy undoes with a few small screws, one on the switchgear and two around the cable housing. the whole thing will then slide off the end of the handlebar, if theres not enough "slide" then take the bars off the top yoke. no need to undo any cables.

alternatively, you could just poke the thin tube from the WD40 can up into any gaps you have and squirt the hell out it, it will get under the twistgrip ok.

Thanks Dave, that's what I wanted to know. I'm not so keen on WD40 around plastic, though. In my experience, white spirit based sprays can make plastic brittle.
