Self cancelling turn signals
 

Having been knocked of the other day, self preservation is at the front of my mind. Although my recent spill had nothing to do with signalling I would like self cancelling turn signals. My 1VJ doesn't have them.
Is there an easy upgrade? Does such a thing exist? Any thoughts?

As far as I know self cancellıng sıgnals dont exıst because the bar movements are not suffıcıent to flıck a swıtch ın many corners. In fact sometımes the bars dont move at all and Ive heard that sometımes a negatıve turn ıs produced (you turn the bars away from the dırectıon your rıdıng ın) belıeve ıt or not.
You can get wıdgets that make a loud bleepıng ıf you leave them on over a certaın tıme though. From most retaılers I suspect...

You could always try fitting an FJ1200 flasher relay and switchgear, they are self cancelling for definite, the things used to drive me mad, cancelling on very large roundabouts.

My Harley in common with most sold within the last 10 years or so has self cancelling indicators. It works on time/distance ie they stay on for 7 seconds whilst you are moving and will cancel quicker if the bike accelerates. I don't like them, most of the time they cancel too early, just before you reach a junction and you have to keep checking the repeater light which is just out of line of sight at awkward times. I'd rather they stayed on with a repeater light where you can see it easily such as in the mirrors as do some custom mirrors I've seen. Or use a buzzer like my BMW.

Thanks for the response folks. So they do exist. I don't have much experience of modern machinery. My 27 year old Electra Glide has a fairly good system whereby the lights keep flashing as long as you keep your finger on the button. A bit awkward but you do get used to it. You get a button on both L & R side of the bars. I was hoping someone would tell me that the switchgear from a later XT would be a straight swap. Optimistic ???

If so I will be buying it back and I hope to get a new set of panniers ...sorry ..saddlebags for my troubles. She has admitted liability. Didn't know you had a BM. What's that then, and does it have seitenkoffer? Hope to see you in June.....if I've got a bike.

A few BMWs have self cancelling signals, but you won'r be able to retrofit the tech to a yamaha.
There is a speed signal input so they stay on if the bike is stationary and go off after a certain time/distance when moving.
Most BMW riders probably don't even know about them.
Might hav been an option, I can't remember. Defo fitted on the R1200 C as I remember dealing with a fault on one.

To be honest, I can't see why you would want them - all the additional complexity on what is a very simple and basic workhorse. Either get into the habit of checking the idiot lights every so often, or fit a bleeper which will remind you (and alert pedestrians when you are in city traffic).

I had a Citroen 2CV many moons ago, which had (uniquely for a car, in my experience) indicators that you had to cancel yourself. It took about a day to get into the habit of flicking them off after you had completed the corner. I had the self-cancelling ones (time and distance) on one bike I had (can't remember what) and they drove me mad. They would always cancel just when you got to the corner, and you had to fiddle about resetting them when you needed all your hands and fingers for the controls.

Simple = reliable = good, in my book.

but i have seen one for other types of bikes.. like this.. so timer based not angle

My BMW K1200S has them as standard, I would prefer if they weren't there, because if I signal a little too far from a junction to advise following friends that we are turning, then they cancel before getting there so need re-setting, ok if I notice, but I don't always and then it confuses people !
