Screw in the Oil tank/ Help!
 

Hi There,

As I was checking the oil level on my xt 600 3tb I stupidly let the screw holding the plastic cover fell in the frame's oil tank.
I'm worried the screw will get suck in somewhere in the frame starving the engine in oil , seize while I'm riding 100km/h.
If I look at the manual, the screw could either be at the bottom of the shaped oil tank or at the end of the upper tube.
I was thinking if it is in the tube I would have to put the bike upside down, to retreive it, if it is in the tank I may have to cut it , but I think also that I would contaminate the oil with steel fragment impossible to clean!
I must be the only one that did that , if anyone has a suggestion whether I should keep riding or remove the screw and how, I'd be more than happy to hear from you!!

dont panic!
get one of those radio aerial telescopic magnet thingys, or ziptie a small magnet on a bit of coathanger wire, and go fishing mate.

DONT PANIC!! And DO NOT CUT ANYTHING!:thumbup1:

The below pic should make stuff clear what you have to do. Drain the oil into a clean bucket so you can reuse it if you want to.
then undo the pipework and remove the strainer and the tube from the bottom of the frame, the screw should be in there somewhere!

Hi thanks Martynbiker,DAVSATO for your advices and sorry for the delay , I tried many method including magnets, vacuum cleaner, draining the oils and so on.
But I haven't been able to remove it so I will leave it there as its seems looking at the frame it's unlikely it will stop the oil flowing...
I will still have a look every so often at the oil stainer during servicing ...

You should take it out because it might not stop the oil flow but it might slow it down enough that will make the engine overheat....and do what Martyn said. take the oil out to a clean bucket by taking out that oil screw you can see in the picture that is on the front of the frame.

Now you have a couple of choices: disassemble everything including taking the engine out of the frame and I think you know the rest OR you could talk to someone,preferably a friend, who has a very strong machine (like those used to work the terrain) that could actually lift the bike and turn it upside down... and believe me, I've seen a friend of mine doing that to his bike lol oh, and it did work :rofl:

Yes there is also the overheating problem, I think I'll go for the fork lift, actually I know someone who may near Dublin harbour, they have those boat lift,let's see if I can convince somebody to lift the bike for me...

Make sure you remove the Tank :rolleyes2: and drain oil first.... and Please..... take a Video of the lift.and the setting it down again..... Im intrigued how your gonna manage it!
