Removing XT chain
 

On the origional chain, the one shipped when new, is there a link to unclip?

I have borrowed a chain tool, but can not remove a standard link.

Any advice on removing the chain would be much appriciated.

As supplied by Yamaha the chain will be riveted, and most after market chains will require riveting after installation. To remove a scrap old chain borrow a small linisher and linish the rivet heads on one link then remove the side plate and push the remaining sideplate and pins back through the chain. If done carefully this will not damage the rest of the chain. If using a split link be sure to press the new sideplate fully in before attempting to insert the clip ( I used the old sideplate as a spacer and clamped it ontop of the clip with just enough pressure to enable the clip to be slid into place, this ensured it located in the grooves first time and was not stretched). For removing the old chain *grins* I just chopped mine off with a hacksaw. It works and, if it's worn badly, it's scrap anyway. Then I just installed a RK 520SXO X-Ring chain with a clip-type masterlink.

You could grind off the end of the pins with an angle grinder.

Personally I wouldn't use a split link to join a chain on an XT. You are much better off using a proper riveted link to join a chain.

You can also buy endless chains (that is, they do not have a master link, they still wear ...). Remove / install by removing wheel, undoing shock and pivot bolt of rear swingarm.

Safest and easiest, but a bit more work.
