Registering frame
 

I've got a 3aj frame with a number on it, and thats it. I trying to check it out and get a reg number so I can build a bike out of it. Does anyone out there have any advice??

Police told me to go to dvla - dvla told me to go to the police. I'm starting to lose the will to live.

I think with current legislation your on a hiding to no where but try using the owners club or any other records Classic bike clubs etc) available for the bike make and type see if you can pin it down to any reg number or any dealer or owner in its past history. If you get its original reg number - (even if that has been sold onto another vehicle)you may be able to work from that with DVLA. But I am sure once the log books gone and the frame not a complete bike its going to be a very big uphill struggle. I did a similar search with an old bmw frame it was impossible to re register it. DVLA do have a vehicle history section and if you fill in the forms off the website you get the full history after paying the fee. But I am sure the tracing function is very limited and you may need the reg number to do a trace, ho ho its great aint it. DVLA and Police records will both use DVLA computer so I would doubt the Police would do a trace unless it was stolen. Best of luck though.

If it's the pukka 3AJ number rather than a 'made up' one by a man in a shed with a set of stamps you should be ok, but it does end up costing a bit to get there.

I brought a Honda NC30 back from Germany in the back of a car :eek3: a few years ago with a German log book. I got a dating certificate from Honda UK for about 30 quid - easy to Google, and I guess Yamaha do a similar thing, then once I had fettled and MoT'd the bike (chassis no on certificate) I sent it all off to the local DVLA office with my insurance certificate, the tax disc money and the 80 quid first registration fee (b****rds!) and got a new reg and tax disc by return of post. It was an easy, if expensive process for a bike only worth about a grand. I wouldn't bother again, espectially when you can get a frame with a log book for about 100 quid.

Don't know if Yamaha keep any records to tie UK bikes back to their UK reg numbers. The certificate I got for the Honda just said what the model was and when it had been built. If they did you'd be able to avoid the first reg fee, but note that most of these XTs are Italian/Euro imports: I've never seen a genuine UK one!

If the number has been 'invented' and won't be able to be validated by Yamaha as a pukka bike, the best you can hope for is a Q plate: I've got a mate with a 1VJ in this position.

Way to do it is ring up the old bill & ask for the vechicle fraud squad number, every constabulary has one & ask them to run the VIN number through the PNC, or find out the address of where the yard/compound is & take the frame down there to show them, they don't like to do it over the phone.

Be careful here, if you neglect to do this & when you go to re register it they will take the whole bike off you not the frame, so its worth checking before you spend any time or money on it.

PS Don`t bother looking on the Sussex police website for the number as its not listed on there (i just checked). :(
