My 1VJ runs a 120/80 18 which actually looks and feels a little puny by modern standards. There seems to be plenty of room in the swingarm, and as the book (Clymer) lists a 130 as standard on the early TT600s, I was going to try a 130 when the current MT21 needs replacing.

I would think a 140 would go in, and as you've got it already, I'd go for it, esp if you're doing muddy offroading this winter - wider tyre = more traction, surely? For road only use it'll probably not do fuel consumption or top speed any favours though.

I'm running mefo mfc12 140/80x17 on my xt600, but I've got an aftermarked exhasut system, dont know if that changes some clearance issues.

Plenty of room in the svingarm

Good point re exhaust - I'm running a Laserpro aftermarket can too - I've had silencer clearance issues on my old XL250 here: at least it took the mud and rust off the inside of the can...

Beware of getting too close to the chain - there's not much room!!!

Got a 150/60-17 Dunlop on the rear of my XT6.....
Had to shim out the exhaust a little.....& remove the stock chain-guard, but that was the only issues with clearance I had.

a 160 road tyre will fit without fouling the chain itself
but the rim and swingarm to accept that kinda wheel might be an issue as i swapped those out on my beastie

as you have the tyre already i'd try it and see what happens.
