protecting air filter

what is the best way to go about protecting the air filter on my 1995 xt400(should be similar to xt600)in sandy dunes and roads for up to 10 days? Currently has a paper and wire filter but can I convert to some kind of filter with an extra cover/sock to make cleaning out regularly easier and offer more protection?

Get a foam filter, they are much more effective for travelling as you can clean them and reuse them. Ive always travelled with foam and never had trouble. In Sahara i cleaned and re-oiled every second day. Its a pain in the ass, but worth the effort!

Never put socks or other gimmicks over your filter. The intake system is a pretty sophisticated piece of engineering, any extra resistance will influence settings and make your engine run too rich.
Replacing the paper filter will probably require some other mods also, as paper filters have much less resistance than any other. There's two ways to go: opening up the system by cutting holes, removuing snorkels etc or resetting the carb.
