Oily Boot

XT 600 Tenere 1VJ 1985
My left boot is getting oily on the top of my toe where it meets the gear change lever.:censored:
I assume I have got a knackered oil seal, gear change spindle area.
Can the seal be changed from the outside or is it an engine out job.:frown:
Any help would be appretiated cos I cant make it out from service manual:confused1:

Thanks .. Smudge

Yes

But the tricky part is getting the old seal out without damaging anything else. Pry very carefully with a small screwdriver.

Does not seem the cause, the gear change shaft is behind your toe, and unless you ride backwards, I do not see how oil could end up on your toe. To find location of leak: clean thoroughly. Spray with fine powder (talcum, etc). Ride for 30 minutes. Oil leak will clearly show up.

There is an oil line that connects onto the bottom of the engine near the gear lever shaft. If the O ring inside the joint is the wrong size or worn it will leak.
I had a similar problem on my Tenere - I couldn't get the correct O ring and tried another which leaked when the engine was revved.

Have you checked the little screw on the generator cover?
Or the big screw cap that covers the generator nut?

Two possibles that are a very easyy fix.
