Oil leak XT 600

Now when I finaly got my XT running again I discover a oil leak, first it looks like the casket on the left engine cover was damaged. I took of the cover and replaced the casket, filled her up with oil and started her up. After a short while it was leaking oil again, after a closer look I did se som oil underneath the starter and when I rev it I did also see some smoke. It seems like the pressure from the Crankcase is coming out in the aerea under the el-starter, it`s a kind of splattering oil out.
Anyone that have a idea what can be wrong ?
The only thing that have been done with the bike is taking of and mount the left side cover.

hi there pull the crankcase breather hose of the airbox end and start it up and see if the pressure comes out of it . the smoke /oil mist should come out this end not under the starter or engine outlet . if all is well now you must have a blockage where it conects to the airbox , dont run the bike with a blocked engine breather or you will run in to all sorts of problems . zigzag

I`ll check it first ting tomorrow. Thanks :-)

Hej,

you also find 2 rubber gaskets (o-rings) behind the left cover - make sure not having missed or damaged one.

Good luck!

Speedy Gonzales 28 Jun 2010 01:35

I did`t see any o-rings except the one on the starter, can you tell me where they should be ?

Hope the pic will do

zigzag : the breatherhose is ok but it`s still leaking so I bought me a dentistmirror so I can see underneath the starter.

bubbla : Are you sure there is o-rings in this position because I cant find any rings in the partscatalog for the bike and there was no rings there when I took of the cover, there is only a casket and the rubber fore the wiring on the stator.

zigzag 29 Jun 2010 23:57

hi there i think the starter motor should have a o,ring where it fits in to the crankcase this could be faulty but its unlikely may be worth checking though , with mirror you should see things better . zigzag

bubbla 30 Jun 2010 21:05

....there are for sure 2 o-rings on all XT550/600 -electric or kick does not matter. Part-no: 93210-13361.

Use this link: http://www.xt600.de/xt_werkstatt/_te...-600-3tb-2.pdf

on page 9 ( crancase-cover 1) you'll find the picture you need, o-rings are #8

Speedy Gonzales 30 Jun 2010 23:15

Aha, now I see it. There were no o-rings on the old cover as I can see. Today I used a mirror to try to locate the leak but it was hard to see anything, it looks like it`s under the starter in the area where the breatherhose is. I will try to take out the starter and see if it`s easier to see where the leak is.

Picking up this old tread, I finely had some time to have a look at my XT again.
Now I took of the statorcover and the starter to see if there was any cracks but did`t see anything. Put everything back together and start her up and there is still leaking oil but now I did see moore acurat where the leak was, under the starter there is a rubber pice that the starter is resting on. Under that rubber the oil was coming from, in this area ther is 2 bolts that hold the engine together. Is there a casket that can be blown or do someone have a good explanation why it`s leaking there. And if anyone have good idea how to fix it so I can enjoy my XT until I have the time for a rebuild or swap of the engine.
The picture is showing the area where the leak is.

Hi, First try tighting those 2 bolts on the main oil line you can see. If that does not work there is a rubber O ring(Gasket) on that fitting where it is attached to the engine that may need replacing.:thumbup1:

bacardi23 23 Jul 2011 12:17

The oil is most likely not coming from there!

Remove the e-start motor, remove little e-start cover on the cranckase.
I bet you are missing one bolt right there behind the e-start motor "sprocket".

Also, Check the rubber tube that connects right between the e-start motor and cylinder on top of the crankcase.

If it is cracked or not securely fitted it will also leak!

The bolts are tight and it don`t look like the oil is coming from the starter seal but I`ll check up if there is a missing bolt behind the starter sprocket.

When the engine is running I can see it`s bubbling oil under the rubber piece between the engine and starter and I find that strange.

The breather hose is changed and I can`t see any leak there.

Thanks and I`ll have a look at it when I`back home in a few weeks again.

Finaly my XT is back on the road.

bacardi23 you where right, it was a missing bolt right there behind the e-start motor "sprocket".

Thanks a lot.
