Oil in air filter XT 600

I have a 1995 XT 600EG which has been stored for two years. For the last month or two since returning from overseas I have been riding the bike around town but since one trip of 40 kms there is oil dripping. I took off the air filter and there is a lot of oil in the bottom of the air filter box (air cleaner is fine) and it appears to be dripping from here. I started the bike and oil is coming from the top breather. I have not over filled the bike and a recent check shows the oil level on the dip stick to be down 3mm.

So what ?

Oil in the air filter is one classic symptom of excessive blowby from worn piston rings. Excessive cylinder wear or worn piston rings would be the first thing I would assume. This can cause excess crankcase pressure from the blowback pushing oil mist into the intake. Easily checked with a compression test.

Hope this helps.

Kindest regards,
John Downs

If it starts just keep riding it....The stock Sub-Saharan answer :stupid:

Joking aside, If the bike is losing it's life blood (oil), get it checked out soonest. The XT may be bulletproof reliable, but it needs this stuff to keep going...

try not filling the oil up to the top of the dipstick. keep it half way or lower and see if oil stops entering the airbox. there could just be too much oil in the tank. (my 1vj tenere doesnt like it full.)
