Ohlins shock?
 

Just saw this on ebay Ohlins XT600 XT 1990-97 E/K 46BR shock absorber on eBay, also Yamaha, Motorcycle Parts, Motorcycle Parts Accessories, Cars, Parts Vehicles (end time 12-Feb-08 18:41:50 GMT) does anyone have any information or views on it?

Strange enough.

The code for the Ohlins usually adapt for XT is the one originally installed on the TTS, YA2201.

Type 46BR is strange too, it means 46 mm width (OK) but the two letters have no sense. The right ohlins type is 46HRC.

It could be 46DR, in this case is a De Carbon version with no external reservoir. Probably cheaper than the HRC, should miss compression knob, and have only rebound, but always an honest shock!

In this case a picture is the only way to understand.


Just checked Ohlins site: It's 100% sure, is 46DR. They have a list and this type is for 90-97 XT 600E\K.

What sort of riding do you want to use it for? On really heavy going, Ohlins shocks don't have a good reputation. I hate to use it but see The Long Way Down for an example... 3 shocks blown out in one day. My friends Chris and Erin Ratay had repeated shock failures on their way up through South America, on both their bikes, after getting custom built Ohlins fitted to their bikes. In the end they reverted to the standard BMW shocks, which really are not great either but at least did not suffer from mechanical failures.

I'm sure there are plenty of people who are happy with their Ohlins, but this is my personal experience, as it was me that had to box up and freight the Ratay's original shocks and send to South America from NZ.

Are the Ohlins fitted to TTR's and XT's if thats true really the same quality as the expensive after market Ohlins you can buy as an upgrade ?

Don't yamaha own Ohlins ?

i've heard the ohlins fitted to the production yamahas are built to lesser specs than the aftermarket ones, i'm in no way 100% sure about that though.
the xt is gonna be my first big road bike and is going to be used for everything! hopefully lots of trips and planning not just to stick to the tarmac on them :)
just trying to figure out ways to improve it allround.

The Ohlins rear shock on my TT600R has given me an excellent ride! The guy who sold the bike to me had just had the shock re-gassed.

Yamaha sold Ohlins just a few weeks ago, so Ohlins is independant again I believe.

The standard shocks fitted by yamaha to the XT600 may not be the best suspension ever made but, they don't break. If you have a heavily laden bike you might consider uprateing the spring but leave it at that. You want a shock that will get you there not some fancy aftermarket item.

My TTR 600 is fitted with Ohlins as standered. From Yamaha they are about £1400 the same shock model is not listed on the Ohlins site but a similar looking shock is about £600 direct from Ohlins.

I have had my Ohlins rebuilt after the previous owner messed about with it. It is now very good.

What shock should I buy for TTR 600re 04
 

I have the TTR 600re 04 with the saches shock and it's dead due to sitting in the Cambodian heat unused before I bought the bike!
I am now looking for a replacement that will handle what we throw at it on and off road!
Anyone have any suggestions ???

OEM shocks and forks are never anywhere near as good as aftermarket stuff from the same manufacturer. Whether its WP, ohlins or anyone else. The bike manufacturers tell them the size of stroke they need and other basics and then tell the manufacturer to build 10,000 of them for 35 eur a piece.

On another note mentioned above - durabilty. Ohlins make racing shocks. Thats what they are designed for. They do not design and build shocks to carry luggage on dirt roads in remote places. They build lightweight shocks to save every last gram they can . . . Great for racing. Not good for durability. There are many many stories of Ohlins breaking down multimple times on long distance travels
