Key not turning in ignition

I've just reassembled a 34L that's been in pieces for a long time now only to find that the key doesn't even turn in the ignition! Would there be any intentional reason for this to happen or is it more likely that the barrel is seized? Key slips in fine it just won't budge if I try to turn it.
A lot of the wiring is in a mess at the moment so I'm wondering if it's locked itself... Thanks

FWIW assuming that you have the correct key what I find happens most often with the Yamaha switches is that the fork locking mechanism on the south end of the switch locks up rather than the tumblers.

They're generally pretty easy to remove. Two bolts from below. A good soaking and a few love taps will usually get them moving again.

We don't have 34l's over here but if they're equipped with locking fuel caps or helmet locks Yamaha keys all three identically. If the key will operate either of those odds are that you have the correct key.

Was working on Yamaha Bikes for a while. With newer bikes we experienced that the key sometimes needed to be pushed slightly forward in the look and only then u could turn it.

That did the trick, it just hadn't been turned in so long it had seized up a bit, thanks.

Membership - help keep us going!

Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.

You don't have to be a Member to come to an HU meeting, access the website, or ask questions on the HUBB. What you get for your membership contribution is our sincere gratitude, good karma and knowing that you're helping to keep the motorcycle travel dream alive. Contributing Members and Gold Members do get additional features on the HUBB. Here's a list of all the Member benefits on the HUBB.
