No lights in my clocks

Hi,

Both bulbs in my clocks aren't working - in the rev counter and the speedo. It happened while in Morocco trail riding so it's possible they've both vibrated loose but they both failed at the same time so I think this is unlikely.

I'm a bit lost when it comes to electrics, so other than the bulbs is there anything else that can cause both bulbs to fail at the same time?

Many thanks.

Like yourself I am not great at electrical problems but first of all I would change both bulbs, then check for a break in any wiring, starting at the bulb holders, check any connectors that may have pulled apart, are all fuses ok? I would also replace them or use a meter to check continuity thro them. Hopefully someone else more knowledgable with electrickery will reply, please post when you have solved the problem, so we know how you got on or broaden our knowledge!!!

PS, where in Surrey are you??

Good luck

Hi,

I've not looked at the bulbs themselves but all connectors look OK.

Am I right in thinking there's only one main fuse on the XT?

Are the clocks easy to get into? I can see two discs on the back panel each with an 'R' clip. Is it a case of pull the clips out and seperating the clocks?

I'll try and get the clocks apart when I have time and the weather is OK (no garage).

P.S. I'm in Guildford.

Thanks

You don't need to get into the clocks.

First off if it's only the meter light that is gone it is probably just a blown bulb.

You just need to pull out the bulb holders one at a time, be careful not to pull by the cables too much as that you can brake the wiring.

If the REV, Neutral, turn signal indicator lights also don't work it is more likely that the connector block (a.k.a connector coupler) must've separated from one another and you'll just need to plug it back in.

Anything else, let us know!

you dont state what year it is, but if irts an oldie the wires going round the headstock can break inside the insulation, only way to find out is continuity test or get all electrics working, put bulb in, if new one doesnt do it and in dark turn your bars lock to lock and see if it makes a connection, failing that heres a wiring diagram for ya

hope ya get it sorted

+1 (im a electrician by the way)

And like Vado says don't go pulling it by the wire, its just a rubber bung pushed in to the housing gently wiggle it side to side pulling at the same time.

If its not the bulb its the connector block.

Hey Mezo, you sure you're an electrician? I thought you were a bike repair specialist by now!? :innocent: XT's in particular

TIP for everyone:
In these recent times, from working on my wiring loom I've come up with an "idea".

If you have trouble pulling bullet connectors (for example) you can put some 2centimeters length shrinkwrap on the male bullet so you can help pull the connectors apart without breaking them apart.

Just make sure the shrinkwrap you use is just big enough to fit over the tip of the connector terminal BUT it has to hold tightly on the back portion of the terminal in the metal part!!!

I'll take an example picture tomorrow and to show it..

Is that joe?

Saw the Guildford bit and thought, can't be that many Xts from Guildford that hav been to Durka durka land this year?
Must be a contagious problem with xt instrument lights packing up,mine stopped one side halfway through Spain,I've not worried about it too much as the thing doesn't go fast enough to worry about seeing the speedo?..
When I've not got 2 other bikes to finish I may actually get chance to look at last couple of minor issues on my own xt..

Guest121 5 Jun 2012 11:38

Hello Marc, yep, it's me. Morocco was bloody good, I expect I'll go back again. Maybe we can get a small group together to go at some point?

marcm 6 Jun 2012 16:24

Sounds a good plan,I just need to finish the last of the ten or so geriatric yzs, find some penny's and get mikes Ducati engine back together...when we going September?..l
