newb here,have '83 xt 600,w/decomprss. trouble.

Hello all, newbie here with a question or 2 about decompress, with the cable disconnected should I feel any resistance when I move the decompress lever?
Because I do not feel any am suspecting that it is disconnected internally/not connected to whatever it is supposed to be connected to on the top side.bottom side seems connected as cable moves when kicker is pressed down.
well just thought i would ask before i take head off for no reason?
Thanks

I doubt very much that there is anything really wrong with it as its all pretty much bullet proof. Normally the only thing that interferes with its operation is that the free play in the cable is set up incorrectly.

To check bring the engine round so that the exhaust valves are closed.( If unsure just whip off one of the tappet covers. and check for free play on the rocker arm. Take the decomp lever sticking out of the head and pull back in the direction that the cable draws, and do it with attitude. Remember that you are now opening up one of the exhaust valves.......with big springs under them.

The only thing that holds the lever forward under normal circumstances is the little external spring, apart from that it should move freely until it engages the exhaust valve stuff.....

Hi notjoe, I had a similar problem to this when I first got my XT, on mine the problem was caused by the half round end of part no 28 being broken off, Bike still ran fine for a while, until the loose piece got caught under the cam lobe and bent the valve and valve guide and punched a whole through the lower head surface between the exhaust outlets, very expensive!

I think your best bet would be to disconnect cable, undo screw 30 and slide out part no 28, if end is missing I strongly advise removing rocker cover and finding any broken bits before trying to start the engine again

Hope this helps!
