New to XT600's
Hi all,

I am new to XT600's having had 2 Ducati's, I must say these are far more fun!

I do however have a few small problems that I cant find in the archives.

The first is I know the bike is running lean, hunting at slow speeds and smelling and running hot 100o normal running on the oil temp guage. Its an 03 4pt with 4500 miles. Question is where is the mixture screw? It dosent appear to be like some of the pics show.

The second is after having the fun of breakdowns and all the paranoia associated to owning Ducatis I decided that as it only has electric start how easy it would be to push start, unless im doing 40mph in top the thing wont start and the clutch just slips, is this normal or am I looking at a new clutch? The cable has slack in it but dosent appear to be at the end of the adjustment.

air mixture under carb a little hidden you wont see it but you should be able to feel the thing with youre finger or try a piece of mirror i used a chopped and filed down nail to adjust ,not shaw about bump starting or clutch but mine did over 50 thousand miles on orignal clutch very relibaly machine unlike those extremly sexy italian beasts

Hi and congrads

The mixture screw is located as shown on the pic. This is the carb from an old XT550. As far as I know the mixture screw is the same on your bike.

Please note that this is not an air screw. To get the mixture more rich screw out. To lean out the mixture, screw in.

Hi all,

Thanks for your help.

I got the mixture sorted with a burnt hand and now running great.

After scanning all the posts I realised when I first got the bike the oil was low, topped it up with regular car 10/40 as would with my old bikes, always thought the clutch was slipping and it was. Full and rather complicated oil change yesterday, 2 sump plugs, filter and the tilting over, the drive looked like the gulf of mexico! Hey presto, clutch not slipping and can push start in 3rd and 10mph YAY! Ducati paranoia over.

I was going to add I used halfords 10/40 semi synthetic, never used halfords stuff before, usually with the price. Previously neutral was tough to get into when hot, now the gearchange is so slick even more so without the clutch, neutral goes in with total ease.

Bash Plate
Hi there

I have been desperately trying to get hold of a bash plate for my xt 600, could you tell me where you got yours from, it looks ideal!

Sorry cant reply to PM's as not posted enough. Its a CRD bash plate,not sure where from but widely available, not cheap though.

Halfords oil is pretty good ! It's made by one of the bigger names although I can't remember which one.

Their professional tools are good too. Also just rebadged stuff. Sykes Pickard I think.

Any more details on the CRD bashplates (model # etc) ? I am in Australia and parts are rare as hens teeth over this side of the world

I was looking at getting a kid at technical college to just weld me up a custom one.

Edit: YAMAHA

Hmmm, have to see if they have a local distrubutor, shipping will kill me!

I bought my CRD Bash plate from a guy called DAVID LAMBETH here in the U.k.

He told me that CRD don't actually make a plate for the XT. You have to modify another model's.

Give him a call, he usually has them in stock..

Just don't let him talk you into any other stuff you don't need. He's quite the salesman.

Hmmm, the site expressly says it's for the XT600 and has photos of it fitted to an XT600, so I bloody well hope it fits my XT600!

AUD$250 delivered, I don't think that's too bad as decent bashplate her will go for around AUD$180+shipping and there is nothing for XT600's in Aus.

That's about £125 ??? Christ, thats almost BMW prices !

You can make one pretty easily for about $10. Aluminium checker plate and a bench vice.
