New regulator has only four wires? original had 5????

Hello all,

Bike is 1986 43F. XT 600

I'm in the process of replacing my regulator rectifior.

The old one (original yamaha)had 5 wires.

The new one (oem) part # 34L-81960-A0 has 4 wires.

The plugs all align up with the correct colours except there is one blank space in the new regulator(plug) where on the old one (the 5th) brown wire would/should be......

Did some one sell me the wrong regulator? Or is this how new one's come and I should just plug it in and go? Or do i need to jerryrig something up?

I paid big bucks for this OEM part so if it's wrong. I'll take it back.
Electrics are not my bread and butter. Any help in figuring this out would be greatly appreciated.

I'm not sure if this will help you, but I will write it anyway

I have replaced regulator/rectifier on my XT600 with custom made regulator that only had 4 wires.

Connect two wires that goes to machine (two white wires), than connect +, and GND wires, and leave unconnected wire that goes to main switch. But be carefull, because if you connect regulator incorrectly you could kill him.

Hello Svakak,

Thanks for your response. I looked at the wiring diagram and the Missing (brown) wire is the one that goes to the main switch as you described above. Is this main switch circuit then left unprotected or unpowered? As stated before electricity is not my forte.

I checked a website in the usa and phoned my yamaha dealer here in Canada and the part # 34L-81960-A0, I listed above, is supposedly the correct part. I had a word with the mechanic over the phone. He said that sometimes updated parts are configured differenty than original and that he has seen regulators with different wire counts. I will need to bring it in to him to figure out if it's correct or not. Bit of a pain as I bucked up for the expensive OEM part to avoid having to mess around with dodgy looking ebay type reg./rect.

I'll take it to the Yamaha shop when I get a chance.

Would still like to hear from others who have come across this problem?

no worries

I had the same with a 55W, same era bike. The regulator even came with a kind of polug in between to make it all fit. Has been working fine for years now.
Red and brown are both 12V from battery; the red one permanent, the brown one via main switch. Apparently the switched 12V is not needed anymore for RR functioning.

BTW, these RR need to 'see' a healthy battery before they start charging, so if your battery is entirely flat first replace / recharge, otherwise it will seem the RR is dead.

As always, you come through with good info.

Well that's two positive responses counting your's and Svakak's.

I will just confirm with the dealer then plug this baby in and hope all goes smoothly.

Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love.
