new member looking at a 1991 XT600 with some questions!

I’m a new member to the site; I’ve been looking for a 600cc+ dual sport for a while to replace my baby KLR250. I’ve owned several XT350's and a DR350s in the past. I ride a Triumph Sprint RS 955i daily but keep a dual sport in the garage for the WV back roads and fire road rides! Anyway, I just got off the phone with a guy selling a 1991 XT600, he says it has 11,000 miles and is very clean with new tires but needs the choke assembly repaired at the bar and the left rear turn signal is broke. He did mention that the previous owner had the engine rebuilt, which bothers me... He also said its kick start only, does that sound right??? He is asking $1700 for it which seems high, especially if it’s a kick only bike, I can buy used KLR650's all day long in that price range. Anyway, please give me some feedback, I looked up the NADA value and in excellent condition it’s around $1200, I know it’s probably worth more than that but I’m not sure about $1700! Did they make an XT600 in 91 that was a kick only version? Thanks a million! ~Matt

Yes they did, XT600E 3TB (1990-1995) would help us all if you filled in your profile (like where are you?) :innocent:

I think maybe the US got different versions to Europe and other parts. My XT600e is a 1991 (3TB) model and is electric only which is what I thought the "e" meant in the model name.

Also I think Yamaha bikes from that era still had matching frame and engine numbers so that may tell you if the engine is original or not.

I have seen alot of bikes on ebay of the same age (90-95) which are mainly imports from Europe, Italy especially, with kick only and a few with both.

The data on the VIN plate should tell all once someone decodes it for you in the workshop book.

Thanks for the info, I think Im going to pass on the XT600 that is for sale locally to me, it looks clean in the 1 picture that the seller finally sent me but it has 11,000 miles, has been rebuilt already for some reason and is a kick start only model, it looks like my old red and white XT350 with the fake radiator scoops!!! I think instead of dropping 1500-2000 on a used dual sport Im going to slap a jet kit and a 330cc jug on my KLR250 and see how I like it, I love the bike, its size is great it just needs more grunt, mainly when I have my better half on the back, luckily she is tiny at 105lbs so an 80cc bump in displacement, a jet kit and a full exhaust might do the trick, if not Ill have one tricked out KLR250 :)

I can confirm that the US models are the same as the EU models!

Mine 1990 XT600E is an US import (model is 3UY) and is(was) electric start only!
