Question need help with some mods for my 97 xtz660

Hi, i am new to this forum and have been searching nearly everywhere for some help and advice. in short i went away last weekend on a ride with another forum... Adventure Rider Motorcycle Forum
it was such an awesome weekend. but as my tenere (xtz660) has such a low front guard in some area's the mud would build up underneath, at one stage the front wheel wouldn't turn because of the build up of mud, so one of the other guys suggested in raising the guard up an inch or two, so first off, has anyone else done this mod and how do i go about doing this mod ?
i would also like to adjust my forks and rear shocker for a more of an off road setup, as i found that there was too much play in the front and rear for some of the terrain we were riding on, i was told that it is currently setup for road use. hope someone can help as i am getting my bike ready for our next big ride in a few weeks, which there is more mud and most of the tracks are designed for 4wd's... in other words really rough.
