My winter xtz 660 tenere project

1 Attachment(s)

Just finished my winter project to rebuild my 94 xtz 660 tenere. Still needs a taller screen for our trip to Poland in June, but have plenty of time for that. Thought I'd post a pic of the bike.

Some of the mods include:-

Gell battery.
Front and rear Goodridge braided hoses.
Front fork oil replaced with a heavier weight oil.
heavier rear spring.
New rack.
crash bars (to fit).
GPR rear pipe.
New front head pipes.
New cables.
Carb rebuild kit.
New paint job and stickers.
Engine looked over.
Renthal bars.

Some of the mods have made a world of difference in handling and performance so thought I would share to help anyone thinking of making the small changes.
Cheers Gav. :scooter:

I don't intend to hijack your thread - it only strikes me how similar looking the Tenere and the Guzzi Quota is, if you turn a blind eye to the protruding cylinders of the Quota:

Hello Gav,

Thanks for sharing photo and details of upgrades with us. What was the heavier oil used and how heavier spring was used... gauged against your weight and potential load i guess.

Can you tell us a bit more about what its like to own and ride XTZ, negative and positive points experienced would be great...

Many thanks

Lovley looking bike Gav :thumbup1:

Can i ask where you picked up the headlight guards??. I'm after a set for my 750 s-tenere??.

We have a run planned down to berwick over the coming weeks. You fancy meeting up there's only a few big trail bikes. My s-ten and a domi and a varadero. Rest of the lads are on sports/tourer's. First run to Berwick is on the 6th of april.Usually anything between 4/15 bikes turn up for our wee sunday jaunts. The more the merrier though and always good to meet up with some locals for a banter.

Cheers. Darren

P.s thought I'd add a pic of my old girl.

Thank you for all your comments.:thumbup1:

XTZ66097 to answer about the fork oil. I kept the fork oil the same air gap as standard but actually ended up using JCB light hydraulic oil. Have played around with a few grades and found this the best and cheapest (free from work) for my preference. I am around 105kg + gear and found the front forks very soft as standard. The rear spring was ordered through a friend. I will have to find out what rating + where he soured it from. The bike handles a lot better now two up fully loaded and is also fine when riding alone, although I do turn the dampening down a little when solo. Pm. me if you want more info on that but hope that helps. I would also say to insert a gel pad into the seat as it is possibly the most uncomfortable seat around! Forgot to put that in the mods. If you like larger singles then I don't think you can go wrong with the 660. Don't want to curse it now but mine has been reliable and a joy to own over the years. Mind I have kept good service/maintenance on it and think that is the key with any bike!

Hi Darren M. I found the head light guards on a web site called Rickycross.it They were actually for the 750 s-tenere but fitted mine also. Think they were around the 65 euro mark. Would be good to meet up so give me a pm. when your next coming down.
P.s That's a good looking s-tenere you have there!

Cheers Gav.:scooter:

Gav, thanks for the feedback I will pm about the spring as your suggestions will help with my bike, I'm about 106+ kg. I like the bit about the JCB oil ... Looking forward to seeing some more photos of the bike i will try post one of mine soon.

Hi Gav,

Nice Ténéré you've got there. I'm riding a 1995 Ténéré since July 2010 and I must say: "I love this bike"
Untill now I changed my windscreen (homemade) and I've installed crash bars. I found the crash bars on the internet but I had to make some holes in the fairing because they were crashbars designed for the older Ténéré model.
Looking forward to see some more picture of the bike.
