minor 3AJ question

one small but irritating occurence that is plaquing me on my 3AJ is that the rev counter cable keeps falling out from under the instrument panel where it screws in underneath. has anyone else had this problem? i am thinking of using loctite but i am not sure if that is overkill for the problem.

any ideas?

I had same problem, just screwed it back in. Not sure loctite will work in this greasy area.

thanks for that! unfortunately i have already done that several times, and each time it just rattles loose and falls out.

i'm hoping there's a cunning "trick of the trade" that some seasoned 3AJ veteran might know of to keep the little b*st*rd in where it belongs...

You may want to ask somebody in the motor trade, as manufacturers and repairers use a compound that acts like a seal. (e.g. If the seal has broken then it is inferred that it has been tampered with - that kind of thing). Perhaps your girlfriend's nail varnish, would do as a substitute?

I guess using plumbers PTF Tape is something to think about, maybe with the nail varnish.

All highly technical!!!!!

I was about to suggest the same. Perhaps you should also check the routing; although there's not a *lot* of room behind there, your cable may be getting pulled.

So PTFE tape + do it up damn tight. You might also want to clean the threads (not the drive) with some kind of evaporating degreaser (white spirit? surgical spirit? alcohol?)

If it's a vibration induced problem, you could always put a dab of rtv silicone sealant between the nut and the cable body or the instrument. (Old 2-stroke racer's trick) Using retaining compounds too often on soft aluminium alloy parts is not necessarily a good idea long term.
