Hi Mezo
unfortunately I don`t have your skills .... this is the best 3AJ I have seen Maybe you should send the pics and report from advrider to the manufactures, they may consider building a real overlander/adventure bike again .... ![]() .... sorry just dreaming ![]() Thomas (who took a 3 AJ to Algeria in 2003, 8000km Sahara riding and no issues) |

Yes it was a bit of a laugh, sadly not all people get jokes though.

Cheers Mark,
One thing ive noticed with this new exhaust is how far away you can feel the pressure pulses coming out. ![]() I was stood 30ft away with the bike just ticking over warming up, my back was turned away & i felt what i thought was the dogs tail wagging on my T-shirt? I soon realized it was the pressure wave coming out of the exhaust traveling across the yard blowing on my back. ![]() You guys wont believe it till you see it, ill make a movie of it & post the link. I just hope ive not gone overboard with the "flow" as many of you know back pressure is a good thing for an engines performance. Mezo.

There`s a bit of a splutter happening? here are a couple of movies i just took, it smells pretty rich as well.
YouTube - XT600Z 3AJ Tenere splutter 2 YouTube - XT600Z Tenere 3AJ spluttering 1 There was a small splutter on the first test ride but it seems to have got worse? the only difference is that ive topped her up with oil. And yes im thrashing a new engine for a reason. ![]() Mezo.

Hi Mark,
that bike looks really sweet. Is the spluttering just a matter of jetting it right? Very best regards, Dave |

Didn't know you was on here as well, im getting Danny to bring his coil round later to rule that out & then if thats not the problem ill pull the carbie out in the morning, its coughing & spluttering & fouling the plug, then when you try to open it up full its well sluggish (cant even pull a wheelie) think it may be something to do with the diaphragm? also there is a loose pipe comming off the fuel pump & i have no idea where it goes, very skinny pipe not much bigger than a strand of spaghetti. Mezo.

That skinny pipe from the fuel pump is just the breather so should be left open. The diaphram on the secondary carb can feel the effects of age, they only sell them as a set with the slide so will cost 70-80 ozi pesos. Also check the secondary butterfly begins to open when the primary slide is 7mm open. Also check the slop on the primary spindle, I had to make new bushes for mine as they don't sell carb bodies anymore. Although this would show up more as a lean problem not a rich problem like your seeing. Good luck with her mate, she looks great. All the best, Dave |

Ok just an update on the spluttering guys.
I pulled the carb out today & stripped it right down & checked everything, there was a bit of crap in there as to be expected. Took it for a blat (yes im English) down the road & there's a vast improvement over how it was before, it was coughing at around 3000rpm before but now im getting much better results but its still spluttering at around 5000rpm. I rang me mate Dave (dblunn/dirtwannabee) and asked him to clarify if indeed there is a 7mm gap on the primary slide before the butterfly opens on the secondary, he said "yep Mez" so i set it at that. So like i said its a vast improvement but still not wheelie material (if you know what i mean) and it still smells rich. Any thoughts lads? Mezo.

Not sure what's causing the mis-fire Mezo, what's the plug look like?
It sounds fuel or mixture related. Choke not sticking? All I can think is to just make certain it's got the right jets in there & the float is set correct,it sounds rich from your description. If you've got that gauze filter fitted I 'd get shut plenty of reports of it clogging, run a in-line fuel filter on the fuel pipe instead. What's the airfilter like? Is the airbox snorkel fitted correct? If everything is as should be then maybe it's ignition related, coil, generator or C.D.I?

The plug soot`s up real quick so its defiantly running rich, i checked the choke to make sure that wasn't on & ill check that again. Don`t have any spare cash or spare jets right now so i just left it set as the previous owner had it set (including the airbox) the gauze i put on is Stainless so it wont rust like i read on here about that happening & blocking the airway. Ive even tried taping up 3/4 of the inlet to mimic the missing snorkel to see if that made a difference but just the same. The air filter is brand new from Dave Lambeth & all the pipes are fitted correctly with no air gaps including the inlet rubber stubs (o-rings fitted & no cracks). I turned the pilot screw (air/fuel) to two turns out as well & the clip on the needle is three out of five. The spark was always very average (aussie slang for piss poor) and i wanted to try another coil in there just to rule that out, like i said this all costs mullah & mullah is in short supply right now. Im going to send an email to the previous owner (Brian the Canadian) and ask him how it was running before it was disassembled for its rebuild, and if he says it was running fine it must be something ive done? remember i have ported the head & put the new exhaust on it which if anything should have leaned the engine off surely (and don't call me Shirly). Mezo.
