Is the manual wrong? (Camshaft installation/tensioning procedure.)
I am plodding along with my top-end rebuild, and the manual suggests installing the cam chain tensioner without the valve cover installed. But as I installed the tensioner, I saw the end of the camshaft tip upwards. This suggests that once the valve cover is installed and the camshaft is properly clamped down, the cam chain would be put under more tension, and the inner bearing surface would see accelerated wear.
Thoughts? I plan to finish everything and install the tensioner last. |

Hi Electricsheep
Hello there,
I looked in my french technical manual, and it shows the tensioner being put back before the cover, and I can't see how tightening the cover could effect the tension of the chain. Maybe I haven't understood what you mean though. As I see it, once you put the head back on, with the chain correctly positioned on the sprockets, your cover should be just that, a cover. Take care, I don't know if this will help you much. Chris PS: Have you pushed your chain tensioner rod in before instalation |

Wrong manual
The upper bearing surfaces for the cam are 'integrated' in the cover.
I always first install everything as it should be (timing correct, camshaft, two bolts for fixing the chainwheel to the camshaft with locktite, cover) and then I install the tensioner. And it works like that. Do the tensioner first, and you risk that it tries to take up too much slack in the chain, slack that is not there anymore when the cover is on and the camshaft in it's proper position. Auke |

I third that
Tensioner is always usally the last thing to go on. You can put it on by all means, just dont install the spring. Remember to push the tension arm back into the tensioner before installing it too.
