manual,and parts wanted

Hello to all you Tenere owners out there. I`ve just joined the forum and am hoping you may be able to help me out. I`ve just bought an `89 Tenere. Only 8,800 kms on the clock and, judging by it`s condition, never used off road. Teneres are rare here in Japan, though fairly low kms ones do occasionally come up for sale and they have mostly stayed on the tarmac. This bike has been modified by the previous owner unfortunately. The tank was disgarded as was the original air cleaner box, he fitted K&N`s.So I need a tank, though maybe someone can tell me if Acerbis that are currently available will fit on the `89 Tenere. I also need an air filter box and a Tenere workshop manual, in English. Is the XT600 manual relevant to the Tenere ? Owing to the rarity of these bikes here used parts are impossible to find and I haven`t even considered new ones, neither would anyone else, other than the superrich at Japaneces prices. I downloaded an owners manual. It says nothing about a fuel pump, does this model use or need one ? Any help or advice would be much appreciated.

hi alan,

first: congratulations!
tank: there are after-market tanks, but even here in europe they are very rare and rather expensive. best would be to look for a second hand 3AJ tank. try german ebay. same for airbox. both 1VJ and 3AJ airbox will fit, but 1VJ airbox should be modified (look for previous postings).
there is an 18 l acerbis tank, but designed for 1VJ and very rare, too. will fit with mods / front fixing points.
manual: i have a workshop manual (german language) and a drivers manual (english).
fuel pump: yes, yamaha has fitted one.
but it's unnecessary and should be dismounted anyway (troublemaker!).

best regards

Thanks for your reply Klaus. As far as the tank and air box are concerned I`ll keep an eye open for both on e-bay. Despite the name I don`t speak German.Even so I`m interested in the workshop manual as it would be okay for specs, is it for the 3aj? Let me know the price and I`ll organise payement.I downloaded the owners manual from the net so I don`t need that thanks. If I have no luck with a used tank I`ll go for an Acerbis and MAKE it fit.Chris Scott mentions an Acerbis "Africa" one- shape-fits- all tank in his "Desert Biking" but I can`t find any reference to it elsewhere.
Best Regards
Alan

Thanks for the tank info. Klaus. Yeah, a bit expensive but I like the idea of a 30 litre range. Also I plan to leave the Tenere in Japan when I eventually leave.Coming back for a holiday I`ll use it here, other parts of Asia and possibly Russia. With that tank fitting several different bikes I could take it with me back to NZ and Aussie and use it on a bike there. So I may go for it.

sorry, i was a bit careless.
this
'Acerbis "Africa" one- shape-fits- all tank'
should be named:
'Acerbis "Africa" one- shape-fits- all -except 1VJ and 3AJ- tank'
you will get serious trouble with the airfilter box because there is no space for it with this tank.

here is another source for big tanks:

they might be able to help if you ask them directly.

Klaus, once again ,thank you. Disappointing news regarding the acerbis tank. Thought it would be just what I needed. As I said before the previous owner fitted K&N`s and a still air box. As it`s unregistered at present I haven`t had a chance to road test it but it idles fine.I was wondering if I fitted Uni foam filters and an air box if that might work. Not knowing the tank fitting position I have little idea of the space available. Anyway when I get a chance I`ll take it for a burn and see how it runs at speed.
best regards,
Alan S
