Long trip Preparation

I will be doing a trip to Cape York of AUstralia in september. I think my main problems will be puncture repairs. I intend on carrying 2-3 spare heavy duty tubes, lever set and tube repair kit as well as the tools needed to remove either the front or rear tyre. I have never had to do a repair yet so I'm wondering if u guys have any tips on doing puncture repairs on the xt600. Does the axle slide out easily or do I need to push it out with tools? Also because it will be my first major trip can u guys give me an idea as to any problems u may have encountered or tips for extended off-road riding. The bike is a 95 xt600 with 19000 kilometres on it. I intend on getting a service including valve adjusting before leaving. Is there anything else I should pay special attention to.

Thanx in advance.

I rode a XT600 to Cape York and back a while ago. Mine was an '84 XT and did not really have any problems. Only issue I hit was getting dirt in the carb' when I came off having too much fun (tried going from top to Cooktown in a a day!).
Tyres for Cape York, I was on a trail based tyre that had already ridden from Melbourne. I did not get a single punture (but did not do much single track stuff). XT's are pretty easy to work on, and the wheels are simple to remove. A couple of trye levers should see you right. But there is a bit of a knack to removing tyres so might be worth a practice at home over a few beers before heading out.

Angus,
I will be travelling to Australia soon and will be riding an XT600 from Melbourne to the North coast. I'd like to attempt the Cape York trip as well but am a bit concerned about the fuel capacity of the standard tank. Did you have a larger tank fitted to your bike? Do you think the Cape York trip can be achieved safely on a standard bike?
Cheers,
Paul

PS OXXT, I'll be doing the Cape York trip end of September so if you would like some company let me know.
