location of engine drain plug on xt600z 1Vj

Is the location of engine drain plug on xt600z the philips screw behind the gear lever on the side of the engine?

wolfzero 7 Aug 2009 00:24

no! that screw holds the clutch arm in place. its the big bolt near to the gear shift shaft

moore03 7 Aug 2009 19:44

the only Big bolt I can has a philips screw through the centre?????????????????

zigzag 7 Aug 2009 22:37

hi there it is just below the gear lever shaft , it will have a pozi drive screw in the middle of it . zigzag:thumbup1:

wolfzero 8 Aug 2009 13:08

thats confusing both engines of mine are the same its just a plain bolt head with a copper washer under it.

wolfzero 9 Aug 2009 11:04

the bolt with a screw in the centre on my bike is the neutral warning light switch

Mine too. The drain plug is underneath.

yeh i'd have thought its pretty obvious that its a bolt at the lowest part of the engine, i do wonder how well some bikes are maintained when some of the basics cause head scratching :innocent:

hi there just to clarify the situation on my 1985 43f the drain bolt is under the gear lever at the lowest point it can be , the neutral switch is to the left of the gear lever with a blue wire atached to it with a small pozi screw, the drain bolt is 17 or 19 spanner size with a pozi screw in the middle as many mid 80,s yamaha,s did. the pozi screw is there maybe to spin the bolt in / out then tighten with the spanner ,just a thought on that one. on a 1vj the drain bolt may not be directly under the gear lever , but it carnt be far away and i am sure it will be 17/19 mm spanner size at the lowest part of the side of the engine. like i seid hopefully this helps find the elusive bolt . zigzag

On my 88 1VJ, the drain bolt is also below the gear lever, with the posi screw in the middle. The neutral light switch is to the left

moore03 9 Aug 2009 22:17

Zig Zag that is the layout on my Tenere XT600 z 1VJ aswell.
Neutral wire screw infront of gear changer towards the forks and drain plug behind it and lower towards the swing arm.
I was wondering what the screw was for .
I presume the drain plug is a normal thread Lefty loosey, righty tighty.
Thanks for the help guys as always.

zigzag 9 Aug 2009 22:26

hi there it,s just a normal thread so no worries mate :thumbup1:

wolfzero 10 Aug 2009 00:39

well actually there is no such thing as a POZI on jap bikes its a cross point more commonly known as a philips head screw.

DAVSATO 10 Aug 2009 13:41

surely the whole range of XT engines are going to be identical except for a few small details? especially major components like sumps covers and castings.
i dont mean identical enough to be interchangeable, but if you were used to even the XT500 engine, you should be able to find your way around any of them, inc the new 660 water cooled.

i agree somewhat with wolfzero, a sump plug is a pretty basic but fundamental part of bike maintenance, it makes me wonder how many people drain their oil through the filler cap holding the bike upside down?

no offense :blushing:

That's one way to get fit. :)
