Knocking Noise

Hi All,

I have noticed within the last week that my 1988 XT Tenere has started to make a knocking sound when in 1st and 2nd gear. This usually happens when gently accelerating and disappears when you get to about 3500rpm.

The sound however (to me) appears to be getting louder and I have even started to notice it in higher gears.

There is no sound when revving the engine in neutral.

Any ideas, I will take the bike off the road until I find the problem just in case.

Regards

Scott

hi scott,
what is the milage of your tenere?
it's difficult to say something without hearing the noise.
is it always present or only when the engine is cold?
in the worst case, crankshaft or rod bearings are gone. but to check this, you have to dismount the cylinder at least.
other possibility is a loosened primary drive. this you can check by dismounting the right engine cover.
did you check the camshaft chain tensioner?
valve clearance?
oil consumption?
good luck!
