Kickstarting XT600Z (1VJ)

Hi,
I was wondering if there is any special technique to kickstarting a 1VJ? I have been using the electric boot up till now.
This may sound like a silly question but my other bike is an MZ and there is a definate process to getting best results.

the trick behind is the correct adjustment of the decompression cable (refer to manual).
if this is o.k., you can kick-start the engine with your hand, no problem.
of course it makes things easier if you start kicking right behind u.d.p.
after some practice you will get the feeling how to reach this point.

Hi, I usually depress the kickstarter slowly until I hear a distinct "Klick" from the decompression lever.
Then I back off and kick firmly.
This usually starts my bike right away, warm as well as cold (full choke).

Hi Ricard,

Your starting technique usually works though not always when engine is hot and certainly needs much more energy and kicking for the old XT500s and DRs:thumbup1:

bring it to top dead centre with little kicks then when you feel the compression full hard kick all the way through its travel.

TOP TIP never kick start it with trainer, slippers or flip flops, unless you like pain!!

Hi stephen,hope this helps you!

Th e technique that i use is simmilar to what has been discussed. As Klaus mentioned the correct decomp, cable adjustment is critical(roughly 1mm play). I gently push the starter down until full comp, then let the starter ruturn to the top(rest position ) and thn give it a good boot. i find this technique yields great results for me, and following these step i can start my bike with my hand with ease!

hope you come right,

Cheers Chris

Hi Fellow Riders

Klaus what do you mean by u.d.p. ?

I am trying to work out the best way to kick my tt600r. I have a bad right knee(partial meniscetomy five years ago ) so i want to minimise the loading on the knee joint when i kickstart the bike. I have been riding an old xt250 that was really easy to start compared with the tt600r.

my other questions - if you kick the bike slowly till full compression on compression stroke is this the best position before giving it a hard kick - when exactly does the decomp lever open the exhaust valve? is it just before tdc on compression stroke

also what is the ideal free play on the decomp lever is 1mm ok or will this cause the decomp lever to stop exhaust valve closing properly when engine heats up? I am thinking the less free play the better - ie the more the exhaust valve will be open thus reducing resistance to kicking

thanks in advance for any comments give

Cheers
Doug

Kickstarting a XT600ZS (1VJ)

Hi Stephen, I have one of these also and I find it starts more easily with the kickstart than the e-start. I agree with what others have said and would add that when cold you need full choke and have to back the choke off a little once it starts. With full choke mine will start easily but will stop again after a few seconds if I leave full choke on.
Regarding de-compression adjustment no free play is bad, could lead to a burnt valve. It is easy to check if it is too tight, when warmed up put your finger lightly on the lever at the engine head, you should not feel any 'tapping' but when you press it in slightly you can feel the rocker arm 'tapping' the de-compression unit.

Dave

Hi all,
Newbie here so be gentle. dont know how to start a thresad yet, I'll get there.
I have an 1985 xt600 and have broken the lever in the kick starter that operates the de-comp lever. I have a clymer but it does not show this operation. When I move the kick start the de-comp lever at the bottom does not move. Can anyone post an exploded view of this area?
By the way, I find this forum has a wealth of information, as well as a lot of humor.
Cheers in advance from Oz
Ken.

Thanks lawries,

I have been trolling but my parts fiche is for a 4PT and dose not show the kick start bottom end.

Cheers from Oz
