kickstart conversion
 

I have just bought a 3AJ, but would feel happier with a kickstart fitted. Can anybody provide a list of parts required to convert?

you have to know that the primary ratio of e-start xt's is different from the kickstart version. you may find it very difficult to kickstart the cold 3AJ engine.

I have put a kickstarter on a 3AJ 2 month ago.
Its half an hours work or so.
You should mount the decompression cable aswell!!! Dont want to know the feeling of a 600cc getting back to you!

It is difficult to start it sometimes when its cold thats a fact..

On tip: Open full throttel, push your kickstarter down 3 times slowly and after that give it a REAL kick, 9/10 times it starts immidiatly.

Kick to electric start
 

So, i'm going backwards, own a 55W Tenere (1984, XT600Z) and am looking at putting on an electric start... (i know, it's really lame, but the kicker kills me when it's hot)... Is this possible? Expensive? How to do it?

I feel like I'm repeating myself (again)

1984 kick only - electric start engine conversion. Due to the lack of clearance of the output sprocket on an electric start engine and the older frames this is not possible without changing the output shaft with the one out of the kick only engine. Are you really that bothered?

It would just be easier to get an electric start bike?c?

The other way round - adding a kicker to an electric start bike is easy like said before. Half an hour is possible to do it all (if you've done it before and have all the bits).
I do have all the bits and they are available to whoever wants to buy them.
The only thing I can't help with is the decompressor that is at the top of the engine. Due to yours being electric start they wern't machined to take the mechanism. It's not a big deal anyway - decompressors are for girls!!!:blushing:
