K & N air filter
 

Hi all,

Has anyone used a K & N air filter on their xt600e? I've got one but the fit is pretty poor. I wanted to see what other folk thought as although the fingers on the airbox should help the seal I'm not chancing it.

Anyone want to buy a K & N, lovely piece of kit:eek3:!

i have used the K&N on my bmw r11gs and it has been good - saved me a lot of money over the years. it started showing daylight through the gauze somewhere in south america. i had used and treated it as per the instructions on the box, but didn't bring the K&N filter oil with me on my trip and, as per instructions, didn't want to apply other oil.

the point is, you can not expect to find K&N stuff when you are a long way from home. possibly another reason to use another type of filter. maybe try filter skins for washable extra protection.

i cut some foam, used normal air filter oil and put it around the circular K&N with cable ties. worked well, and would on other circular filters too i think.

Done about 1,000 miles with a K&N fitted to my XT600E. It was fitted by the previous owner, when he changed the exhaust too. No problems at all, but I haven't checked it yet.

K&N oil is probably the best, but I should think any the same weight will do the job. A big selling point of the K&N is that it is washable.

The important thing is that the mixture is checked when changing an air filter, as if it's less restrictive, (which they are, compared to std) more air flows in leaning the mixture off. If it was more restrictive, less air mixes in, giving a richer mix. Adjustments may have to be made to set it up right.

If you haven’t checked it you won’t be aware of what I mean. The original filter is a perfect fit but the K & N has a big gap between the airbox wall and the mounting point that the original sits tight against. The K & N relies on the oil and the airbox fingers to seal it. No way is it as good a fit. I realise that the oil helps stick it but as it’s your engine life your dealing with I’m not up for taking the chance.

Obviously it's down to opinion, you may look and think it's fine n' dandy.

Hi Tennentj, thanks for the warning, I've been meaning to service the bike, so I'll check it out.

I know that they're less restrictive, and it stands to reason that if they let air flow through faster, then they most likely let larger dust and dirt particles through too, leading to more wear, as the dirt flows around the engine in your oil.

I'll let you know what I think when I take a look.

Fitting K&N Filters
 

Hi, new to site and so a bit late posting this but someone might find it useful. I fitted a K&N (part No. YA-6090) to my 2002 (4PT) XT a few days ago £32.74 inc. del. from ybfilters.co.uk At first I did'nt think it was going to fit properly, it did'nt want to finish flush with the front of the airbox, I took it out and shone a torch in to the airbox and at the back there's a vertical channel which the rim of the filter fits into, it's really tight, I greased the rim of the filter a nd shoved it in, there was a satisfying little hiss as the trapped air was displaced and hey presto job done! As yet I hav'nt had to adjust mixture pick up seems o.k. and that's with fitting an Arrow Can too, I can feel the extra horse pushin me up the arse and it's not too noisy either.
