Installation help with H&B rack

Hello,
I have purchased a set of Hepco & Becker panier racks for my old xt and am having difficulty fitting it. The instructions are in german only, contain no photos and according to my German friend I enlisted to translate "are crap".

The bike is a North American model 1986 standard xt600 (not Tenere). I believe this bike is the equivelant of a 1983-85 model in europe. the bike is configured with : the rear drum, kick only, oil tank under left rear side panel, airbox under seat.

The racks look like they will all fit up but the kit comes with a huge number of washers, bolts and spacers and other hardware that despite my decent mechanical ability has completely stumped me. According to my german friend the instructions go on about retaining/including the standard luggage rack. My bike has no standard luggage rack.

So. I was hoping some one who has an early xt with Hepco & Becker racks could post up or email me a couple of photos of their bike? Failing that perhaps someone has a link to english instructions? I have tried several translation programs with zero sucess.

Many thanks for your help.

Pawlie

I hate to say it, Pawlie, but I think you're stuffed. I looked at H&B racks a while ago, and 'our' 34L is the only type they *don't* make brackets for. Your only way out is to get some custom adaptors made up, methinks.

(I take it she's running nicely with the new oil pump then?)

The XT600 Thread - ADVrider

dos not look like much help but they may know how.

Just a quick update.
I've managed to cobble together the racks after making some homebrewed aluminum spacers and a few runs to the hardware store for metric fastners(always a problem on this side of the pond). Don't know if it's exactly as H&B planned but seems to be working well.

Thanks for the link to that xt thread.

XTfrog: The oil pump must be doing its job as the bike is snorting all over town. What fun!

Cheers,
Pawlie
